Skills in desperate need of rebalancing

Fishing was kinda a niche thing to get the best food before Ashlands, but now it is entirely useless.

It is nice under some conditions. But this is depending on knowledge of the player. If you gain access to haldor and the bog witch and killed a serpent you can use the Sailor's bounty feast for swamp and mountain. That provides good health while also maintaining a good pool of stamina.

If the bow skill gets nerfed like suggested bows will fall far behind. But i agree that crossbows could use a buff to skill gain. That is reasonable.

I disagree for the bow skill as it would still be extremely strong, just more difficult to level up. Also on higher skill levels where it becomes more and more time consuming to progress fully drawing the bow is so fast that you almost always do it anyways.

Just wanted to throw a thought in the room. Early bows have the problem that you can miss your arrows with them. Changing the skill adds another downside to bows early on. Sometimes if i use bows and stagger an enemy with a fully drawn shot i follow with a fast arrow that is not fully drawn afterwards to finish the staggered enemy. In the end it would be pay off in the mid-late game with the commitment needed. I dont like that.

For farming you only take the scythe into account. That is pretty blindsided. Once you get the scythe you already have a fairly high farming skill through gathering berries and using the cultivator for the first 3 crops. But i agree that it should be consistent and give exp based on harvested crops.

Admittedly, when they introduced the farming skills I already had more than enough of most crops and just occasionally had to get some late game stuff, so I have no reference of what level a player would have from farming by hand until unlocking the scythe.

I would say that would be around 30-40. Depends on the players needs. In my last playthrough i had it around that level with a farm the size of a workbench radius build in a circle with dirtwalls. Another tool for farming would be great. Something to put multiple crops into the ground. Vanilla farming is hell for tendons. Just another click and another.

Yagluth‘s breath also is quite good for leveling blocking. It would just be better imo if a player that used a shield for as long as a sword would have both skills on a similar level.

That would be great. Mobs die very fast in the early game. Mostly it is better to rush them down instead of blocking their weak attacks. (I have to try blocking with yagluth´s breath some day) And i want to add that the whole discussion is different now with the ptb update. I write that down under the last post.

I expect another difficulty spike for Deep North and if it was made clear that high skill levels (90+) were recommended for late game biomes we would have much less people crying about difficulty in these forums.
While some of my examples might be a bit too much, I still think that I‘m mostly correct with my obervations.

Yes i agree with that. And i would love that people would have a different mindset. Some problems are related to low skill levels. And these low skilllevels are the result of a specific playstyle. it may be a big part that people misunderstand that dying has still consequences and just throw their body at the problem until it is solved. for example "we died like 10 times in the queen fight."

I guess that some of us have thousands hours in Valheim just exploring a single world, not all spent levelling up skills, granted.

I'm curious to know how many hours of dedicated activity should be enough, ideally and in all fairness according to you, to reach level 90-100. I'm not talking about progressing by playing, as I do, but about having to play to progress, a goal that seems to be a necessity at the heart of this opinion on skill balancing. Maybe when transitioning to a new biome?

Also, would this be linked somewhat to the perceived "lifespan" or "time to finish" of the game?

Well, what kind of play to progress are we talking about? Using a farm to level a specific skill? Or for example running around with one weapon type killing everything for exp?

In my ideal world skill farms would not exist because they let you bypass normal progression, however for some skills farms are basically a necessity.
Apart from that I‘d prefer if, no matter what weapon you focus, you have no level progression disadvantage.

With the ptb we got some new points for the discussion. Irongate provided tools to gain skills. Spoilers ahead.

The battle brother can help you gain exp. You can hit it and it can throw stones or something at you. This helps too get melee and block exp. You can also use it to level bows and magic with it. Leveling elemental magic is broken at the moment. Fader provides a buff to adrenaline that lets you use the staff of frost with the ashlands trinket for five minutes without stopping. The ashlands trinket alone lets you use an effective pool of around 700 Eitr with the staff because it replenishes 100 eitr at the trinket activation.
On the other hand blood magic is left out. Skeletons wont attack the battle brother and they do so little damage that the shield from the staff of protection wont break.

Im glad that they provided some help to get some skills back without using swamp spawners or other silly stuff. On the other hand it encourages auto afk with macros. That is kinda bad. And the problem with crossbows wasnt tackled either. I wonder if a battle brother can be used to train sneak too.
