Don't play much in the way of counterspells these days (have done in the past), but personally it's great fun playing against a blue player with counterspells:

Adds a whole 'nother level of consideration to when & how you play your spells....

1 - save your powerful plays for later: no deck runs an inexhaustible supply of counters, so you start with the less good stuff, and save the good stuff for later when they start to run a little dry.

2 - use instants or spells with flash: hold your play until the end of their turn, that way they should have to choose between dealing with that, or dealing with whatever you are going to play when you untap.

3 - when you get to play 2 spells a turn: lead with the weaker spell, they either counter it and leave themselves open for the more powerful spell, or they don't; in which case you just hold on to the more powerful spell for now, & use it later.

4 - when you have a presence on board already: go through combat first; maybe they shoot a removal spell at your attacker and leave themselves open.

It's much better when you're playing physical mtg obviously because you get to read body language and tells (which isn't really something you can do that well on arena). In paper I'd say it's very hard going for the control mage. But even on arena you can play with them & make their life super difficult.

the thing about control players is we don't have the win til like... turn 20. Slowing your game down to a turn 10 win is still going faster than us! dropping weaker spells, baiting our counters out, even just playing in your second main phase so we have to decide whether to interfere with combat or hold to counter something big, all of these make it really tough for us.

Or I can just concede and move on at the first counter spell and be in another match in less than 30 seconds playing against someone who will actually play the game instead of sitting in the corner jerking off waiting for me to play.
