RimWorld: Dominion would let you create your own AI-recognised faction and rule the Rim your way — as a noble king, ruthless dictator, criminal overlord, or alliance-builder. You could expand across the world map, control vassals, run multiple settlements, and reshape politics through diplomacy, conquest, or crime. It would also introduce underground basements and simulated multi-storey buildings that add vertical depth without a real Z-axis — using visual layers, floor switching, and sub-level maps to keep it fully compatible with RimWorld’s current engine.

Hey everyone,

After Odyssey, I’ve been thinking — what if the next big RimWorld DLC focused on power and control? Not just running one colony, but actually running the entire world.

I’m calling it RimWorld: Dominion. In this idea, you’d be able to found your own AI-recognised faction and decide exactly how you take over. Do you rise as a benevolent leader, a feared warlord, a criminal kingpin, or a diplomatic unifier? The ultimate goal would be to unify the entire world map under your banner, whether through diplomacy, conquest, criminal influence, or strategic alliances.

On top of the political side, Dominion could introduce something players have wanted for years: underground basements and simulated multi-storey buildings. These wouldn’t be full Z-layers (we know that would require major engine changes), but instead a visual and gameplay system to give colonies more vertical personality without breaking the game’s technical limits. Tall watchtowers, multi-level apartments, and fortified keeps could add range and defense bonuses, while underground spaces could be used for secret vaults, wine cellars, prisons, bunkers, or hidden labs.

Dominion would let you create and name your faction, design an emblem, and choose a government style such as monarchy, dictatorship, federation, or cartel. You could found multiple autonomous settlements that produce resources, train troops, and send tribute without you having to micromanage every pawn. Other factions could be turned into vassals, paying silver, goods, or soldiers in exchange for protection — or under threat. Diplomacy would be expanded to include treaties, alliances, trade pacts, and, of course, the ability to break them for your own gain. A new territory control system could add borders, patrols, and regional claims, while espionage and covert ops would let you send pawns to influence, sabotage, or steal from your rivals.

The DLC could support multiple playstyles. As a Monarch or Lord, you’d rule through honor and prestige (with extra depth if you also own Royalty, but it would still work without it). As a Dictator, you’d maintain absolute control through fear, military might, and strict laws. The Kingpin path would let you run a black market empire dealing in drugs, smuggling, and cartel operations. Or you could be the Diplomat, uniting the Rim through peace and cooperative alliances.

It fits perfectly after the last expansions: Anomaly brought mystery and horror, Odyssey gave us exploration and space travel, and Dominion could deliver politics, control, and deeper construction — adding a grand strategy layer to RimWorld without losing its survival sim core. It could also integrate with all previous DLCs: Royalty for expanded noble paths, Ideology to tie your ruling style to your beliefs, Biotech to engineer heirs or super-soldiers, Anomaly to weaponise or suppress strange threats, and Odyssey to extend your influence into space.

How Multi-Storey & Underground Could Work in RimWorld’s Engine?

Tynan has explained in the past that RimWorld is limited by its single Z-axis, which makes true separate floors impossible without a major engine rewrite. However, Dominion could simulate verticality using layered rooms and visual overlays — similar to how the game already handles roofs or “overhead mountain” without actually stacking levels.

For multi-storey buildings, players could use a floor selector UI to switch between views, with each floor essentially being a separate “building shell” on the same Z-layer. Pawns would move between these levels by using stairs or ladders, which would simply teleport them to the correct floor view. Certain tall structures like watchtowers, multi-level apartments, or fortified keeps could offer gameplay benefits such as increased vision range, improved shooting and cover, or beauty and prestige bonuses. Pawns wouldn’t physically stand above others in 3D space — instead, the game would hide other floors and only display the one currently selected.

Underground spaces could be implemented in a similar way. A basement room could be flagged as an underground area, much like a mountain-roofed tile, with unique lighting and temperature rules. Stairs or ladders would lead to a hidden “sub-level” map that exists underneath the main one, functioning similarly to caravan or quest maps. These underground areas could serve a variety of purposes: secret vaults, storage rooms, prisons, bunkers, hydroponic farms, or drug labs. To make them more dynamic, special events could occur below ground, such as cave-ins, toxic gas leaks, or tunneling insect infestations.

Technically, this approach avoids the need for a real Z-axis. All movement between levels would be visual and positional changes, with pawns pathfinding as they normally do within a single layer. Basements and upper floors could be handled like separate map instances, meaning the game only renders one at a time. This would keep the system lightweight and feasible for RimWorld’s current engine, while still giving players the fantasy of building vertically or digging deep. It’s a method similar to how Prison Architect and other isometric builders handle multiple floors without true 3D pathfinding.
