Gatekeeping can be a great thing as it prevents it from being destroyed. Its what made Middle Earth last for so long before Christopher Tolkien passed away and it was made worse by greedy corporate folks.

"Gatekeeping" isn't the same thing as "someone holds the IP", which is what Christopher Tolkien did. Also, since his death Middle Earth hasn't gotten any worse, the books and everything else that Tolkien wrote are still available to be read the same way they've always been for several decades now. None of that has changed.

On the other hand, I do recall what actual gatekeeping looked like, back when the movies first came out. That's when we had a whole bunch of stuffy purists saying that the movies were "garbage" and a "terrible adaptation" because they did things like change Faramir's character and other things like that.

But yeah, nobody took them seriously back in the day either, and the movies actually became massive cultural touchstones. So I guess there's one thing which hasn't changed in about 25 years: gatekeepers are just as laughable and pathetic now as they were back then.
