Personally in Vanilla, outside a few specific Uniques with high skills like Green and Headshot, I tend to make use of buying peoples freedom from slave shops as one of the most reliable ways to fill ranks early on with competent units.

Eye-Socket on the Eye's East Side, and the Way Station on the west side across from it are a old reliable location for me to recruit from.

Eye-Socket gets hit by Grass Pirates a lot, and for those who dont know Grass Pirates in vanilla can be reliably recruited by buying their freedom. I find about 1 out of 3 will join without any need to save scum, when they are bought out.

They will have skills like Martial Arts and Crossbow, in addition to the usual skills most generic units have, in their high teens to mid 20s. Get them each a decent crossbow, and 4 or 5 of them can gun down most of the other factions they normally get beat on by. The coats they call wear are handy to cross into Venge to.

Which is the next tip for you guys struggling. That Waystation on the other side I mentioned, Gray Flayers pass by heading into Venge, where they almost always end up dead. Easy to follow them in a kit that protects you from burning, and help yourself to all their Hash once they burn or go down to beaks, spiders, or thralls. Then take it yourself down to Flats. I have cleared several hundred grand in a day of starting by using that tactic, and by the end of the first game week I had a squad of around 20 Grass Pirates. Who I then sent just 8 who had been well kitted in high end weapons and armor stolen from various shops in the region and sent them down after the Bug Master. 4 of them made it back carrying the BH to Admag. 2 had died during the actual fight, and 2 had acted as rear guards to draw the bulk of the enemy off while the other 4 got away.

Seriously guys, training up units is not the only way to get good units. The Shek rescue tactic is also very reliable. I have had Ghost of the Berserkers, in Vanilla join me after I dropped him by some manhunters who chained him up, after I took them down, and rescued him, bam instant unit with skills in the 50s and 60s.

But even things like humble Dust Bandit crossbow users make a decent viable unit bought from slavery. Better then most bar hire generics for less cats typically.

You should not need to spend time training if wandering is your main playthrough goal. Just use the tools the game gives us all in Vanilla to get a capable squad quickly and get to wandering. They will endure, and grow in skill as you do, and if they die now and then, go hit another slave shop.
