The Decline of the Fighting Game Genre: The Role of Toxic Community Culture
Baru saja
NALADADA
I grew up playing fighting games. They’ve been part of my life for as long as I can remember, from late nights in arcades to years spent grinding ranked ladders online. I’m not a newcomer; I’ve achieved the highest ranks in most fighting games I’ve played, proving myself against some of the best in the world. But due to how toxic the FGC has become, and how it ostracizes targeted individuals, I will not post my FGC avatar name. The environment has grown so hostile that, despite my skill and love for the genre, I can no longer support this scene.

1 - Aggressive and Hostile Environment
Even for high-ranking players, the FGC can be relentlessly hostile. Trash talk, constant belittling, and the pressure to “prove yourself” over and over make the community exhausting. For new players, it’s even worse — they’re often mocked, excluded, or humiliated before they ever have the chance to learn and improve.

2 - Gatekeeping, Harassment, and Malicious Behavior
The FGC has long had a gatekeeping problem. Only certain types of players are respected, while others are treated as outsiders no matter their skill. Harassment — whether sexist, racist, homophobic, or otherwise — is still far too common in matches, streams, and community spaces.

And the problem goes far beyond words. Some elitist players take things to disturbing extremes: cheating to protect their fragile egos, hacking opponents’ accounts, and even launching cyberattacks against players they dislike or can’t beat. I’ve been targeted myself, and it’s no longer just about “competition” — it’s about malicious abuse. This poisons the environment for everyone and makes participation genuinely unsafe.

3 - The “Hardcore” Stigma
While the depth of fighting games is one of the genre’s greatest strengths, the way difficulty is glorified has turned it into a weapon for exclusion. Many in the FGC treat non-elite players as second-class citizens. Even as someone who has reached the top competitive levels, I’ve witnessed (and experienced) how quickly the community dismisses or belittles anyone they see as “beneath” them.

4 - Amplification Through Streaming and Social Media
Streaming and social media could have expanded the genre’s reach, but instead, they often amplify its worst traits. Personalities who thrive on humiliation and negativity attract the biggest audiences, and their fans imitate this behavior. This normalizes toxicity and frames fighting games as an arena for hostility rather than skill, strategy, and sportsmanship.

5 - Shrinking Player Base and Stagnation
Toxicity, harassment, and outright malicious acts drive away new players and burn out veterans. With fewer people staying engaged, developers lose incentive to innovate or invest in bold updates and new games. This stagnation makes the genre less appealing compared to gaming communities that actively cultivate inclusive, supportive spaces.

<Conclusion>
I still love fighting games, I always will. I’ve put in the hours, earned the ranks, and proven myself at the highest levels. But love for the genre isn’t enough to overlook a community that tolerates (and in some cases rewards) elitism, harassment, and malicious attacks. The fighting game scene isn’t shrinking because the games are too hard. It’s shrinking because too many within the FGC make it unsafe, unwelcoming, and miserable to be a part of. Until that changes, players like me, the very people who should be its strongest advocates, will continue to walk away.

If this comes across as a rant, I apologize. My intent is not to lash out, but to shed light on a real problem in hopes the FGC can become the thriving, welcoming space it has the potential to be.

Honestly, I just want everyone to have fun regardless of skill level.
