It's difficult for me to be genuinely annoyed at this game/franchise simply because it really is a matter of taste. Some people seem to delight in this so-called "classic fixed camera" design, which is meant to evoke sweet memories of (very) early 1990s game design. Some people, but not all people. I'm clearly in the "not all people" group, and to me Tormented Souls (TSO) is definitely an acquired taste!

I can only assume that TSO plays vastly differently with a controller, because using mouse/keyboard is without a doubt the scariest part of both games. Never mind the gross-looking monsters or over-the-top human adversaries - trying to move Caroline around is the biggest "survival/horror" experience I've had in any game so far.

It really feels like playing a parking simulator where your job is to nudge cars into slots by inching forwards, then backwards, and then trying to remember if the car goes to your Left or its own Left. As you may have noticed, when Caroline is moving towards you, the WASD movements - clunky and unrefined to begin with - must be mirrored inside your head. And this usually with monsters in hot pursuit. Some people seem to enjoy this - but not all people.

On the store page, the recommended specs include a 10 GB nVidia or 16 GB AMD card. Sixteen gigabytes of video RAM to run what is fundamentally a beefed-up 2D hidden-object game from Artifex Mundi (with a few gross-looking monsters thrown in). No wonder a lot of posters are complaining about crashes, and while I only suffered 1 crash, it was so severe that I had to unplug my PC from the wall socket! My computer was effectively bricked - I couldn't even Alt F4 or Ctrl-Alt-Del my way out of the frozen game. Other than that, it has, to be fair, been a smooth demo experience.

Caroline, as you probably remember, was introduced in TSO1 with a very short nude sequence that had streamers going into live-action panic on Twitch and YouTube. Apparently, PQube weren't going to repeat that faux pas, so they wisely made sure to dress Caroline in underwear when she awakens in the Infirmary looking like a porcupine.

While the graphics quality has improved, PQube clearly need to learn a thing or two about optimization. Sure TSO2 looks fantastic, but at the cost of 16 GBs of VRAM? This is like a 1970s 7-litre V8 Cadillac producing 250 HP compared with a 2025 turbo-charged, 4-cylinder, 2-litre engine that easily produces the same amount of HP. One of these cars is optimized, the other is a bloated land-yacht from the 1970s.

Caroline herself looks pretty much the way she did when TSO1 ended, Except now she has gotten the weirdest, most grotesque-looking mouth - I mean, I've seen pictures of deep-sea creatures with more refined mouth shapes. I assume that PQube wanted to make her lips move with the dialogue, but frankly I think they made her a great disservice.

Anna, her sister, looks just plain weird, but given the crazy storyline of the franchise, I guess PQube can get away with this low-effort absurdity.

Based on this demo, if you're in the "some people" group, TSO2 promises to be everything you like about TSO1 - and then some! If you're in the "but not all people" group, just skip this game, and find one that plays like it was made in the 2020s rather than the 1990s.
