Sort of off topic, but I consider this to be a lite as well, although it is borderline. The players starting options or available options during the runs can change over time due to how much you play, true -likes basically offer zero changes to player starting conditions or available options in a run due ot how much a player has played or unlocked, imo.

You can unlock it all in the first couple hours, though. And it's really more like an insidiously clever forced tutorial mode than a true roguelite unlock situation. It starts you off gently and slowly with each character, and then makes more strategies, builds, and options available to you as you unlock each tier. With a true roguelite, the meta-progression lasts for-EVER. It's like it never seems to stop, and even at optimum efficiency it can take dozens of hours to unlock everything. Here, the achievements are nasty, yes, but everything that has an effect on your starting conditions can easily be blown through in very little time, if you know what you're doing. Only problem is, it's tedious to do. But you can still avoid it altogether if you just play a custom game. Once you have it, everything in it is unlocked, and you can just do whatever kinds of quick runs you want and get a "true roguelike" experience. Most roguelike games nowadays have that kind of thing, where the roguelike is one of several game modes.

Given your current performance, you better, since in this game, it's the best way to learn. Not a literal cheat engine, mind you, but using the Save & Quit to restart the battle. Due to the seeds, a battle will always play out in exactly the same way, so you can learn what works, and what would have worked if you'd done something differently, as well as how the mechanics of the game function. Anything different that you do is exactly what would have happened if you'd done it the first time, so it really helps you figure out what you did wrong, versus where it actually was just bad luck that you need to try and mitigate. It's also good for when you accidentally play a card that you weren't supposed to, or do something in the wrong order, although not as helpful as an undo button would be. And it can help you win some troublesome or more "unsporting" fights that are weighted against you, but it doesn't guarantee anything, because if you were gonna lose the fight no matter what, then you're gonna lose that fight, and it can't change that. It feels like it gives you a lot of power, sometimes, but it's actually very fair.

What a dogwater take. If they appealed to ''most people'', then there wouldn't be a Trails to begin with. It's a series that attracts a very niche audience—the slow-burn, worldbuilding, inter-connectivity, etc. Let it stay that way. We don't have to make everything like everything else.
