I keep having NPCs duplicate during quests at times. Like I just had dinner with Mikan and there were two of her in the house. The same has happaned with Noubu and Hanna, and that's just off the top of my head.

That happens with me with most quests that take place inside the NPC's house. One version of them will be located in the house doing whatever they normally do during that time of the day, and then another version of them is also there doing the quest scene.

I think you and I have very different concepts of how an RPG works.

Plot, characters, narrative, and world-building. Those are the cornerstones of RPG.

Killing stuff, looting stuff, running around exploring stuff...all a distant second.

(There are certain aspects of the interface I'd have done differently, and I find the minigames very annoying...but I've dealt with those using mods)

Also, a lot of your complaints seem to suggest a preference for greater efficiency and linearity, which in my own experience are the antithesis of "good" RPG practice. Indeed I recently watched a video that shows how far we've come in terms of what the video author calls "handholding": the excessively-visible visual hints to "help" the player find loot, traverse terrain, and so on...to say nothing of the completely contrived device of having the player's avatar talking to itself out loud as a clumsy "hint" system.

Back in the mists of time when I was playing tabletop D&D in person with my college buddies, anytime we were in a situation where the DM was clearly steering us we derided it as "conveyor-belt D&D." More recently I've seen it referred to as "D&D on rails," but it means the same thing. And both then and now, it's completely de-immersive.

The worst thing about Steam by far.

As mentioned above, you can actually avoid forced updates. You can easily revert to any old versions of games. This has been a thing for years.

I recently updated my BIOS so I really hope this isn't the case that it might already be fried, this is the only game it does this on though.

even with bios updates they are still frying themselves. and if you ran it for long without bios updates its even more likley to be dead.

It could also be your psu or bad ram, but the intel chip is what I would bet on. Millions of those chips have already fried themselves and most of them will eventually.
