A new approach to tutorial / on-boarding new and returning players (a teacher's perspective ; )

I know there is a thread on issues with the tutorial. This post is to offer possible solutions from perspective of long-time player, who always does a test of new releases from perspective of someone who spent a lot of time in education. This is not, by all means, the only solution, but it may give you some insights.

*** Warning it is long and detailed, written off-line after several hours in newest game version ***

Playtesting 1.13 (Aug 2025)
I don't want to watch the videos - but the game keeps insisting I have to do that
The first "quest" requires me to kill animals (for meat), cook some of that meat, and find eggs. A new player, without access to a fridge might be rather unhappy since the meat keeps going bad. And eggs? Which animal are you supposed to squeeze to get eggs? Chickens? Easter Bunnies? If you require a player to do something that is not obvious you really need to give them more information.

Hint: videos are not the players friend. Clearly written text, which can be quickly scanned for relevant info, is superior.

Yes, if you spend time "not playing" the game and try to find the info on your PDA, you will eventually discover a simple answer: kill creatures that roam shorelines. Creatures which are a random spawn and only randomly drop eggs. Here is a basic hint for a tutorial - do NOT create something that relies on a random chance. This is a basic recipe for frustration in new players. They are doing what you told them to do, but they can't complete the quest because they don't get the random loot item. (As an example, I just spent a couple hours looking to my second egg. In that time searching in and around water, I did not see a single needed creature. I did however manage to gather almost 50 samples of the rare resource needed to craft fuel cells and 7 samples of the rare resource needed to create fuel for a warp drive.)

Solution? Make an actual tutorial, which focuses on teaching new players (or reminding returning players) of critical game mechanics which they will be using for the entire game. Mechanics which focus on the survival / crafting aspect. It is fine to foreshadow story elements but sending players on useless fetch quests only creates a bad impression of your game by focusing on the wrong aspect. It is difficult to craft a compelling interactive story. It is real easy to craft a tutorial showcasing the amazing crafting mechanic which includes thousands of unique workshop blueprints created by your community.

A simple brainstorming game start / tutorial (this is not the only way, nor do I think it is the best way. It is just the thoughts of someone who spent a majority of their life "teaching" and is bored with retirement ; ) It also reflects things I did to prepare for testing 1.13, including creating very simple blueprints for a simple shelter, a "scrapyard" basic HV and a "scrapyard" basic SV.

Basic survival generally considers three needs: shelter, water, food. In a survival situation, lack of shelter will kill you much faster than dehydration or starvation. Your game's most outstanding feature is the crafting workshop / blueprint resource.

Note: I arrange these by "missions" based on your stated goal of five missions / chapter; they can be done out of order based on which start a player selects, potentially the game can prioritize / suggest missions. Players can / will do "story missions" as they encounter them so there is no forced linear progression. Although the game may need to add "checks" before sending an unprepared player to their death or on a wild goose chase. Completing the missions listed below should adequately prepare a player for story missions, without wasting tons of resources / time. Since the player selects which parts of which mission they want to pursue, there is less "hand holding" and more player choice / engagement.
