Personally, I think the Master Levels as a whole are more unremarkable than straight up bad, though their original presentation certainly doesn't help, especially with most levels playing the same old D_RUNNIN tune over and over and over again. I don't regret playing them but I may have felt cheated if I paid full price for them back in the day.

Some levels had their own story blurb in the attached text file, as fan made wads usually do, but there is no overarching plot across the entire pack, nor where they really intended to tie into Doom's main storyline.

For example, The Black Tower was about a cyberdemon getting turned into a human and seeking revenge against those demons who betrayed him, so you are not playing as the usual Doomguy.

The final story text of this release and others (as far as I remember) that have put the Master Levels together as an episode (instead of individual maps) pretty much boils down to congratulations for beating the game, with no substantial plot whatsoever.
