The system.log should be in the mods folder itself, so somewhere in the vanilla beyond folder. If its not in the vanilla beyond folder look in the mods cfg file under the log section where it is. You need to read it freshly after the game has crashed.

It is an upgrade, just not a big one, unless you are only interested in mods.

If all you want is to play the base game, the old version is good enough, this one just improves pathfinding a bit, but not even to a modern standard, as it is still rather wonky, just less than before.

For the graphics, I honestly cannot tell the difference. There are improvements, but very inconsistent between models (some have WAY better new textures than others), and not really looking like a modern game either.
