I personally think Doomsday engine is better. Hit shift+Esc and you can go wild with tweaking it the way you want. It has way more effects that can be enabled and disabled.

I also think it does lighting better for Hexen. There is sky lighting which slightly allows the sky colors to "lick" the environment a bit which can be tweaked. It makes the scene come to life more.

Sky color on the first map is like night and day different.

There is also adjustable Ambient Occlusion which GZ doesn't do. It works in Hexen and the dark fantasy setting.

I like the default bloom effects on Doomsday. It actually looks nice and IMO doesn't ruin the game's aesthetic. The mods for it are very hit and miss however. I like some of the 3D items and higher resolution textures, but most 3D models on enemies don't look right because of the original sprite's limited animation frames, and I don't like the glossy effect on many of the high resolution textures.

I started Hexen in Doomsday circa 2008 and had my saved games corrupted twice, so I now only play on Doomsday casually. It's also for this reason I've never finished Heretic or Hexen from top to bottom and I'm only trying now with this release.

^ give the home base more of an RPG feel with characters that have flavor and input. Legendary Items, New routes ( Dead Cells like) adding new tile sets and content.

Ultimately, a new end game campaign would be extremely welcome. Give us MORE PROGRESSION AND FLAVOR OF WORLD BUILDING. The pixels of this game are sooo charming, reel us in with that OG RPG character story telling.
