Is squad being hacked rn?
gather around folks, it's story time (TLDR: scroll down to the h1):

even in BF2 I had plenty matches in which players did lutanic activities. almost as braindead as you see it in CoD or BF nowadays.

however BF2 indeed managed to regulate the amount of stupidity by limiting gameplay features, e.g.:
- no autoheal for anything – only medics were able to revive and heal, which forced any player to proceed with caution, to eventually fallback and change positions while always having an eye on the medic. vehicles needed to be repaired by engineers or supply drops.

- players were only able to spawn at the SL – which forced the SL to always evaluate the current situation, especially beyond the frontlines.

- strict classes including a very limited variety of weapons to choose from

- no infinite stamina for infantry

[...]

these core elements made any idiot realize very quickly that it is very hard to proceed without support.

this sensitive "net of dependencies" eroded over the last 15–20 years. imho mostly caused by the publishers dragging their studios to build in features which increased the players' "time-to-live". I've read gaming articles back then which suggested that having a greater "time-to-live" would increase the chance that (casual) players may eventually use any ingame or signature feature which was designed to differentiate from other shooters. Publishers have noticed that many players weren't able to progress to a certain point which enables them to use those features because dedicated pro players blocked or made it very hard for them to progress. So, they made it easier to compete with pros (autoheal, respawn at any squad member, mix class features like C4 etc. with any weapon) – again, this happened gradually over the course of many years.

Back then it made sense: less complex → increased time-to-live → more chances to use those exclusive features → increasing probability to make the player enjoy his match → better reviews, feedback → increase in sellings.

BUT, this shifted the expectations of the customers, leading to games with features and ingame mechanics we have today... basically it has been normalized to have "easy" shooters mixed with tiny bits of teamplay combined with some sort of ADHD jumping gameplay to make flanking those pros easier and faster.

for me it comes down to this question: Was it the greed of the publishers which led us to these washed-down standards or did the pro players dominate the public servers too often, making it nearly impossible for casuals to get any joy or progress?

So...,
is Squad the successor of BF2?
15 years ago I switched to PR to have any real challenge; dominating public servers made no fun anymore. I quickly realized that PR was nothing like BF2.
And so I think... no, bf2 was a fun online shooter...

... in which you DIDN'T need 15–20 min. (in RAAS) prep-time to get all players into gunfights.

... in which you could join a public server, turn on music and start playing as you wished.

... in which you haven't been bound to the needs of the squad. You picked any class and had fun.

Having quick enjoyable fights was the main aspect. PR and squad are the complete opposite. But yes, squad has core elements which remind of bf2 , but bf2 and its definition of teamplay and mechanics in shooters has unfortunately died 15–20 years ago and is uncompareable to anything we have nowadays.
