this is basically unknown -- to my knowledge, Steam makes no attempt to identify unused accounts, or people with multiple accounts, to create statistics with these removed.

Nonetheless, the statistics that ARE published are here.

EDIT: on the other hand, I don't see the total number of account there anyway, so maybe they aren't publishing that. The number of current users should be reasonably accurate, IMHO.

They did note they had 50 million users[www.gamesindustry.biz] when they released Big Picture last year, but no idea how much it has increased since then.

Create new account, make post on forums click view posts and id will show you exact steam users number. (?author=number)

Doesn't matter how many users, just look at the top 10 games and simulataneous players on at a time or whatever, those are active accounts.
