Is there room for a new FPS game
Hey guys. I'm starting up a computer games company and doing a bit of research. I'm wondering if there is any room for a 'celtic' themed FPS game out there. If I were to pitch it, it would be like a mix of skyrim v halo in terms of cncept but because we're a small team the graphics and worlds wont be on a par as these games. in saying that we do plan to fully develop the story and game play. So want to hear from you guys what you think. Especially guys with no conncertion to the celtic traditions. I keep hearing that only irish people will play it but I think once you have a good story it doesn't matter where its set...right? Would love to post some pics of the first 'draft' we done but not sur eif i can here.. Will find my way around.

Would love to hear what your pain is in FPS agmes.. what irks you? what you you like to see in a new game..

Regards

Rob

I think my main concern with any FPS game is performance/feel.

You should try to make it so every single person that plays the game with reasonable equipment gets 60+ frames/sec.

Also the feel of the movement has to work. for a good recent example. far cry 3 blood dragon performs and feels way better than standard far cry 3.

Another example: The recent battlefield games look much better than the recent CoD games, but if I had to choose one based purely on movement/performance/mechanics, CoD wins hands down. It's just not anywhere near as clunky as BF.

As for your theme/story, IMO if the story is good enough it doesn't matter what the story is.

Hi don't really know what i can say abut game like that but i want to point out you can open a free greenlight concept so you can show how the game is + you can see how everyone respond to it

"celtic themed" is a bit far stretched...any details on that?
And what exactly is the mix between Skyrim + Halo...i can't see they have much in common..?
And do you really mean F(irst)-P(erson)-S(hooter)? Or only First-Person-View?

Questions over questions :)

Apart from that, if it's accessible, then i don't think it matters that much if it's vikings, celtics, aliens or whatever.

I don't know of any "celtic themed" FPS game, only a handful of strategy games in a Celtic setting. I think that any such FPS will automatically be put in the same basket as the Viking first-person games.

Which means your game will unavoidably be compared to classics as Rune or the more recent Viking: Battle for Asgard (or even Skyrim/Oblivion). While the graphic quality of the latter (even though not even top of the line) may be to much for a small beginning company, you should make sure you get at least the level of detail of Rune. These games that are based on a specific culture stand or fall by how well they "feel" as well as how good the gameplay is.

Story is important sure, but I think that gameplay should be a higher priority than just the story. Story-driven FPS are scarce - good story-driven FPS even more scarce. The few that work usually do because everything clicks into place: story, gameplay and "feel", not just because the story is good.

That said, a Celtic setting might be interesting although I cannot image how such a game will look like. Level 1: Celtic village. Level 2: Stonehenge. level 3: another village. Level 4: another Stonehenge. Level 5: yet another Stonehenge. Level 6: grotto. Level 7: an almost completed Stonehenge. Level 8: druid's cove Level 9 - secret level!: the quary where all stone for the Stonehenges comes from. You get the idea: it risks getting boring very fast unless you have a brilliant level-designer.

Celtic themed does indeed not say much.
Are we fighting leprechauns or something? lol, or well, at least something mystical?
Is it Celts in their own historical setting, or maybe something steampunk or even sci-fi with heavy Celtic themes ( -I wonder how those would look-) ?

And you might mention FPS, but will it actually be a shooter? because y'know... crossbows do have slow reloading times per shot, won't be very action packed... If it's in a historical setting, that is...

Hey folks thanks for the feedback. Some interesting questions and idea's to think about. Been doing a little development. It will b more of a role play with a lot of fighting and shooting. We're developing a hand to hand fighting system along with futuristic weapons to use in gameplay. There's also kinda parkour abilities to climb trees and buildings etc. The setting is on an 'Otherworld' - a paralell world where the culture and traditions of the Celts didn't die out but has amalgamted with different kinds. The cities have embraced technology so we've a lot of sci-fi going on along with tradtional folk who have not embraced it but who are from a different time..kinda like the numenorians in tolkiens world. Mystical/sacred. The enemy the - the fomorukú, banished from this world to the otherwold a long time ago have been rallied up to reclaim their place amongst the other races by one of the 'numenorians' (or what we're calling in the game 'Tuath deDannan'). Does this make them bad? Your characters mission is to first of all find answers to all the chaos that happens on the day of the solstace when the enemy invades. You must take the hero's journey and through your decisions dicover what transfomation takes place in your character. This also leads to the ultimate outcome, for good or for bad, for light or for dark. You decide.

Hope this is a little more clear. Is there a way to post images here?

This sounds very...ambitious for a first game.

I've not seen many games that have managed solid first person melee combat well- Skyrim did an ok job, but was still flawed. I'd love to see a game pull it off properly.
although, in my opinion, tryign to balance shooting, melee combat and free running in an FPS game could be a stretch.

What previous experience do you and your team have in game development, if you don't mind me asking?

Will you be using a custom engine, or basing on an existing one?

What kind of art style are you aiming for?

First up we're new in the game development world. No experience what so ever as a company or even workin in game dev. In saying that we've a strong team of storytellers and artists from different disciplines, be it film production, architcture, visual effects, animation etc. Plus I think coming from a new and fresh viewpoint can be a bonus for content and creativity. I also believe its not hard to make a game - even a good game..just hard work. The plan is to go above and beyond. Standards in artwork, anmation and gameplay are pivitol to the sucess of this game. It's being made for an audience to enjoy. Treating like a massive film production.

We are developing in unity. Great tool for what we're trying to achieve and the artistic style is being developed by a fresh study of old middle eastern arcitecture along with celtic styles and also looking at the work of a few predominant contemporary artist for ideas on the furturistic/sci-fi world we'll be building.

It's not hard to make a bad game too, like this one : http://store.steampowered.com/app/242800/?snr=1_7_15__13

This seems very risky... Shouldn't you have someone that is involved in the video game industry since you are making a video game? It's good that you have a strong team of artists and storytellers, but the way in which this all can come together is through a good programmer/developer. Your perception that making a good game only consists of dedication is very wrong. Many developers are completely competent at making a fantastic game; the concept, structure and prospects are there, however, their capacity to produce and meet these demands falls short ultimately due to limited funds.

Cheers pjmtlg. Thats definately where we dont want to go. Ah for sure sascat - our programmers are very competent and pure gamers too which helps. We also have industry mentors too to guide us along this journey. All the points of concern have already been looked at with a critical eye.
