Stuff like this should be optional, not forced.
Valva KNOWS they could have gone a few different BETTER directions with the chat system. This is just stupid.
Additionally I doubt this effects the majority of their userbase, but for those whom it does, it's probably a pretty big deal (I know it is for me). That doesn't give me very much hope on resolving the issue. In the past they've adjusted, added, or removed features in ways that were extremely detrimental to a significant fraction of the userbase but since it was for some reason considered necessary (or even an improvement?) the changes stuck. In some cases the changes are completely legitimate and involve real issues (even if I disagree on how they were dealt with) but this... ? I can't think of a single reason why this would be necessary. What, are they somehow saving on server space? Is this meant to be a security measure for users (and if so, why the hell do they show chat history, which is possibly one of the most insecure features ever for shared computers)? I have no idea. Hopefully I'll get some answers... crossing my fingers that this is some sort of mistake. But I doubt it.
I didn't know this was happening and keep forgetting, and so every time I scroll up to click links or to save chats in a text file, I realize I've lost days or even just /hours/ of stuff. It's pretty distressing.
