How do I stop steam from disabling my global media keys?
I don't use steams music, I don't intend to, and as far as I can tell the media keys don't even do anything in steam, but whenever I have a ♥♥♥♥ing steam windows selected no other program will respond to global media keys, I've tried using both my headset and keyboard. Is there anyway to change this and why the ♥♥♥♥ does it do this to begin with, I've scanned the options countless times and can't find anything relating to media keys.

MY FIX: So the solution to my particular problem was... any program ran at an administrative level would disable my media keys if it was selected, for some reason this included Steam (and as a result I'm assuming the overlay that was being used in my games). I have no idea why windows 10 does this, or if it can be disabled, but until I need to run a program as admin and use my media keys I will pretend everything is good in the world! :)

Works fine for me, I can pause and unpause Mediamonkey without problems when steam is in focus. Works fine in games and in big picture in windows 10.
Maybe it is your software/hardware? What are you using?

Works neither in regular steam, big picture, or in game. I'm also on windows 10 and using chrome (google play music) and streamkeys.

It's looking like it might be an issue on chromes end, I'm looking for a stand alone google play music player now.

google play music does not support mediakeys as far as I know, maybe that is what you use that streamkeys thing for?

But yes, this sounds like a software issue. Try some of the other software in this thread and see if steam really is the problem.

Try contacting steamkeys and ask them why it isnt working with Steam, It probably has something to do with the browser in Steam which uses chromium. Try going to your library, dont open the store. Select the library as a startup page in steam and never load any websites.

Or download your mp3s form google and a real mediaplayer.

But i bet it is streamkeys that is trying and failing to change track on the steam store.

So even with a standalone music player (albeit unofficial google play music) my media keys will not work when any steam window is selected, it will work when literally anything else is selected looks like though, this is super ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ frustrating as I want to be able to control my music with my headset when I'm using the steam controller.

Which one?
Downloading music sort of defeats the purpose for me, as the reason I use google play music is for it's ability to generate radios based on a select few tracks or albums, it's the only reason I pay for it and use it, it just is really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ to constantly have to alt tab if I want to change what I'm listening to or dislike a song to hone in my preferences when I'm sitting on the couch with the steam controller.

EDIT: This is the standalone player I was talking about, literally behaves exactly the same as it does in chrome with streamkeys. https://github.com/MarshallOfSound/Google-Play-Music-Desktop-Player-UNOFFICIAL-/releases/tag/1.8.0

That thing is still a website in a program. Not saying it shouldn't work but it is the same as steam in that respect. That is where the problem is probably, you should file a bug and have them solve it.

But do you still think that Steam is the problem here? You could just try it with some other software, I bet you have some mp3 somewhere that you could test with.

Google play is pretty nice but I don't use it for gaming for this exact reason. Spotify has a real windows client and works fine with games and with my local mp3s.
So I downloaded MediaMonkey and confirmed in the settings that the media keys were mapped and set to global, and media keys just don't work at all in media monkey for me, not even when the window is highlighted... so I'm feeling like that "instant" windows 10 upgrade I made two days ago wasn't the best choice, FFS.

EDIT: When setting another hotkey to play/pause, like numpad 1, and setting it to global it does in fact work!!! Unless of coarse I have steam selected... what the ♥♥♥♥ is going on here!?

You can undo that windows 10 thing within 30 days of upgrading if you should want to. But it is working fine for me with windows 10 so that might not solve this.

So the mediakeys doesn't work at all for you? Not even with Steam not running? Maybe it is hardware? Did you try both the headset and the keyboard?
Also exit all those chrome things, any streamable software and that google play thing before you test, they might be hogging your mediakeys. Maybe even reboot, can't hurt.

EDIT: yes, sounds like all your google play addons and that is messing up your mediakeys across your entire pc.

Yeah I consistently try bot my headset and keyboard hotkey to be sure, also I'm really loving windows 10 and won't downgrade, but it looks like if I want this little ♥♥♥♥♥♥ fixed I'll have hours of troubleshooting with drivers that I simply don't have time for right now.

Why do my iTunes/Windows Media Player/etc media keys not work after I install this extension?

This is unfortunately a limitation with how Chrome currently handles global hotkeys. As soon as a global hotkey is set it will hijack that hotkey (as long as Chrome remains open). There are a couple of possible solutions:

1. Disable Streamkeys when you are not using it/using desktop apps that require the media keys. This will free up the media keys as long as it remains disabled.

2. Change the hotkeys to something else. If you change the hotkeys to something other than the media keys, the media keys will be freed up for other apps to use.As an example, I currently use Cmd+Shift+2 to play/pause (on mac).

To change all these settings go to the Chrome extension page (chrome://extensions in the URL bar).

The problem is no longer stream keys, I'm not even using them anymore, I was getting the exact same problem in MediaMonkey, doing more testing now and it's specific applications that disable my global media keys it would appear, steam being one of them. My M&B CRPG launcher for example will also not allow me to use global media keys, the actual mount and blade launcher will, but the mount and blade game will not... what's the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ point of global media keys if they aren't even ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ global!! AAHGAHGH

What about chrome, is chrome completely shut down? Is chrome.exe running?
Sounds like stream keys messed up your global hotkeys, contact them.
Shut down steam chrome and everything else and try mediamonkey again.

Yes chrome is completely shut down, the process is not even running and I've removed stream keys from my computer. I've also ran some more testing, and it's just specific programs or windows that when I have them selected my media keys will not work, I don't even think it's posisble for a chrome extension to for example affect the fact that if I have "Computer Management" selected my media keys will not work but if I have a normal "File Explorer" window selected it will... I can't even ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fathom what is going on right now.
