Any policy on multiple games made from the same template?
As the number of complete game templates increases on the Unity asset store, we're going to see more and more people who just reskin a template game and put it for sale on Steam. This is completely acceptable from the Unity Store's standpoint - that's why the templates are there. However, how does Steam feel about it? If Bob buys and reskins Tunnel Rush and puts it up for sale on Steam, and then Joe buys and reskins Tunnel Rush and also puts it up for sale on Steam, is Valve going to allow that? What if Sam then reskins Tunnel Rush and puts it on Steam for free so people don't get ripped off?

Don't we already have Digital Homicide doing that? And then suing anyone who dares to give them bad reviews.

We already have a dozen UnitZ clones on the Steam Store.

I don't see why anyone should feel differently about assets on the Unity Store than they do about any other bit of gamedev middleware. People's use of assets/engines/tools etc is a matter between them and whoever they're licensing those resources from.

you should ask this, why people buy same ♥♥♥♥♥ game with different color ??? if they stop buying them we will see less game like that in steam .

Uhm.. Haven Modern Military shooters been just a template for the last 10 years?

Only if they all used the exact same map, textures and models. We literally have 12 of the exact same game on Steam (greenlight) with just the name changed, and thats just 1 asset pack. Using unitz as an example , only 1 of them tried to make a game out of it. All the others are just copy and pasting the example game from the asset store to the Steam Store.

edit - yeah sorry i meant greenlight not all of them for sale.

And if that works... it works. People will buy what they want to buy.

Are they actually on store? I got the impression they were all (mostly all) on Greenlight.

Anyway, nobody is doing anything legally wrong. It's up to the customer if they reward this lazyness or not.

People are still not used to see the underbelly of the gaming industry.

It shouldn't be allowed because chances are it's a lousy starter game anyway. I wouldn't even care if greenlight was removed, that's just for all the failed games without enough merit to make it on their own.

You mean like how Angry Birds, one of the best selling smart phone games, is just a blatant rip off of some old Flash game?

Scott Cawthorne would disagree. FNAF got started on Greenlight. Thing is, STeam isn't here to cater to just you, or me for that matter, but to millions. When you deal with that kinda of base. Inclusivity is the way to go. People will buy what appeals to them. If it doesn't appeal to them, they will not buy it.

More like they aren't used to the staggering degree of choice. People who only ever followed the gaming magazines, consoles, or gaming news sites are the sort that have always had blinders and filters on. They were never aware of the true depth of options. Those of us who spent time around the games section of Happy Puppy and Tucows on the other hand saw many, many, many games that were not rich enough to afford the notice of the larger media but they still existed.

NOw in the days of physical copies, retailers stocked the games the heard about, that they heard other talking about. They didn't stick un knowns for the most part becauyse they were a risk. And that worked find. Now we've hit the digital age. Now we have a point where the retailer is not hampered by warehousing or shelf limitations. SO they can stock something for everyone.

@Tito Shivan Just FYI, when moderators move a thread, it tells the author of the thread that the thread was deleted in his/her notifications. Sorry for the confusion.

Interesting feedback. It sounds like some people are already trying this, but maybe no game has been published by multiple different authors yet. Hopefully it will never come to that, I don't want Steam to turn into the Android store.
Der Ungrund 2016 年 5 月 16 日 下午 11:20
Steam already is android store, unless you haven't been paying attention. Valve has no quality control and no longer seems to care.

I wouldn't especially care. If people want to sell dumb stuff and others want to buy it, more power to them. It only sucks because it's impossible to find new games on steam these days, mainly because 15-20 games are released every day and most are ♥♥♥♥ quality, so browsing is impossible. There are so many games I would have bought day one in the past that I don't find out about until months later via word of mouth on some other site.

I also don't think Valve realizes how much the glut of games actually devalues the other games on steam. There are a million indie RPGs on Steam, for example, which makes each successive indie RPG released worth less in some small way as, even if all of those games are awsome (which they aren't), no one could ever have the time or money to play them all.

Yeah, I know that's what the new curation tools are supposed to be for, but there's too much for even the curators to keep up with.

Valve always goes to extremes, though. At first people complained they had too much power in deciding what goes on steam, and those critics were right. But in response, Valve went way too far in the other direction. There has to be some kind of happy middle ground.
