People who like them will buy and play them. People who don't are free to ignore them.
One argument that always stands out to me when opinions about a certain subset of games comes is:
And yet those that bring this argument often have those two to three games that they dump hundreds to thousands of hours into, playing the same exact game with the same exact objectives with the same exact mechanics, graphics, weapons, prizes, etc. But it's those other games that are all the same that are repetitive and boring.
I see the same argument for SP vs MP games. People don't want games that are SP only because "who wants to play the same campaign over and over again? Boring." Well how is playing the same MP maps over and over again any different?
And it's fine that you have that opinion. I play games that I like, you play games you like, but what's the point of grabbing the soapbox and declaring it to the masses?
"YOUR GAMES SUCK!"
Ok? So, don't play them, then, I guess. It's not like we're short on titles or different genres, today. Play what you want and don't worry about what others are playing.
Well, in the era of self publishing, blogs and the like it is probably more like at least 99% of everything is crap - after all the more content there is, the less time you can spend on each item unless you massively cull down your interests and be more selective, or it will result it having a massive backlog of things you plan to read/watch/play but never get around to. But the rule still applies that no one will ever agree on which stuff is good. And egotistical and self centred people will continue demanding the stuff they don't like shouldn't exist in the first place.
Even back in the day; people remember Wolfenstein 3d, Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, Shadow Warrior, Dark Forces, RoTT, etc yet nobody remembers all the garbage that came out in that era, a lot of them being no more that cashgrabs trying to ride the Doom Clone wave.
Because some games exist not because they'll sell well but because the devs just really wanted to make them.
OP is either Trolling or a hypocrite.
Have a look in his post history.
Posted in both Cultic and Selaco forums (both retro FPS (both good btw)) before making this thread.
In other words, their opinions are the RIGHT one and everyone esle doesn't know what they're talking about.
I never said that weren't any good retro shooters out there, so stop being disingenuous about my position. I'm saying the bulk of them are rather average at best or are overdoing that exaggerated pixelated aesthetic that they have to them. There are some very promising games in the works, I'm acknowledging that fact, but every time I trawl through lists of retro shooters it seems at times that in order to find something worth wishlisting, it really boils down to separating the proverbial wheat from the chaff. It's like modern takes on 80s synth-pop music that tries to look and feel 80s - there's certainly some admiration to be had in the attempt but with a few exceptions, the end result often leaves a lot to be desired. I'm saying there's too much creative stagnation with a lot of retro shooters.
And of course, if I don't like it, I won't buy it, but if you get upset by me exercising my right to put my two cents in over something that has zero bearing on your gaming choices, then you are the one with a problem, not me.
Seriously, what creative stagnation? I tried 5 retro or retro-inspired demos for the next fest. All FPS, all different to the point of the skills I've just honed in one royally ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ me in the next. Hell, we've reached a point where there's 2 distinct schools of retro shooters by now which only got in common them being "retro" and "shooter" with the rest of the gameplay being rather vastly completely different. But even shooters from the same school don't play the same. The good ones anyway, if you chose to stick to that sea of uncreative same-ness, that's your choice. There is great & varied retro shooters, I suggest you actually check them out before claiming there's no creativity.
Well, either that or you're soo not into shooters, you don't see all the not-so-subtile differences.
The problem you're nailing onto "boomer shooters" here applies to EVERY SINGLE GAME GENRE in existence.
In fact more than that every single form of media in exsitence. I could regale you with tales of DJing and trapsing round record stores and markets having to trawl through tens tons of trash to find something good. YOU HAD TO DO IT - there was no other way.
Or the people I know who have their own festivals or record labels being sent ten tons of stuff that just is useless to them on the offchance that they find something good.
I'm sorry but this is how everything works. I'm sorry if this is new to you, but that's just how reality is.
They call it an "iceberg" for a reason - because about 90% is "under the water" (ie, ♥♥♥♥) where the best is above.
As for the whole “overstayed their welcome” thing… well… feel free to play something else. It ain’t like publishers suddently stopped producing games when Dusk was released.
Ignore and let other people have their fun.
Hell, I have THOUSANDS of games as I don't sell any of them. If I gave up buying games now in my mid fifties I'd still be OK by the time I'm 80.
And I have a fraction of the realases on about 80 consoles and computers all told. Not even a fraction of all that's ever available.
Utter bloody nonsense.
