Unpopular opinion - Retro Shooters are losing their nostalgic value
I've been forced to edit this post and have rephrased the post title, because I am tired of being harassed by nitpickers and pedantic types.

Firstly, I am well aware that I don't have to buy anything I don't like. I am aware that there are some excellent retro shooters out there right now. I'm not calling for them to stop. I am merely looking at this from a market perspective. I am saying this - do you think that the large selection of retro shooters out there is affecting the overall quality of nostalgia-based games, and shooters in general? Do you think their novelty is wearing off, even a bit? Yes? No? Maybe?

I never wanted them in the first place (also I own some from bundles I bought) - but you know what, I am totally able to chose not to buy them. If other want more and more of those - why not?

Feel free to ignore the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ mee-too games, focusing on the good ones. There's still a lot of good ones.

Revenue will determine that. Once publishers stop making money with a genre, they'll stop making it. At least until it comes back around on the wheel-o-fads.

I did not even recognice the names of these games. I just ignore genres, I am not interested in. Why the hell should I even care that these games exist? I lose nothing by them existing on the fringes of the gamer society.

Nobody can and will force me to play them. Nobody can force me to play "dribble ay" live services either. People are free to make and do what they want. We are free to play and buy what we want.

If the devs are making money, good for them. If not, it's their problem, and they will stop it in due time, if they are eager to eat every day. Most people are.

Boomer Shooters? I didn't know there was a market for FPS games aimed at the 60+ crowd.

Well, we have life long honed skills and tactics. :D Most of the time I search for difficulty mods for games, to make it more difficult for myself.

Buuuuuut in the case of multiplayer ......the reflexes are no longer what they were. We simple "Get too old for this ♥♥♥♥ ....".

Still, sniper headshoots from a distance, through a thin wood wall without much aiming is no problem. Tactics and kmowledge of human nature ...

It's no different really than games getting "remastered" to be prettier but basically still the same game but for a "new release" price tag. That people will pay and further encourage publishers/developers to do.

Nope.

Or at least this is normal. ALL genres and ALL times this sort of thing has happened and will continue to happen. It's how markets work.

If something gets popular people will copy it. There is literally no market this does not apply to.

The thing you seem to be ignoring is this - DOES IT SELL?

And it would seem yes, it does. And while that happens they will continue to be made.

I don't know why you're even remotely bothered by this as games are virtually limitless. There's no shortage of games so it's not as if their existence takes up other games not being made.

I can't stand beat em ups but I absolutely never bemoan their existence for the same reason.

Definitely. But they are a cheap way of making a shooter game and the increased popularity helps selling. That's why.

Better the B grade than the barely working A and AAA stuff.
Seriously though I think calling every low res, gameplay focused fps a boomer shooter does a disservice in the same way calling every fps shooter a doom-clone did back in the 90's

The simple truth is many of these games are just deviating from the coverbased, health regenerating, samey arena press x to Y shooters that have become so popular. PEople remember the fast twitch game play of the old days and and how fun they were.

And quite honestly...the marjket seems to be quite hungry for them.
The name does not make sense.
If something gets too much, its calling a genre like something it has nothing to do with

Ignore them then.

Well put.

This smacks of the same sort of daft reductionist argument that so many do that lack any merit. It's all very well not to like them, but to lump them all together like that shows you either don't understand them or you don't know what you#'re talking about.

Sounds a bit echo chambery to me - that's the sort of daft name that would come up from something like that.

The fact is they sell or they wouldn't continue to be made. And like you, I'd FAR sooner games that accommodate people's tastes were made rather than banal tripple A borefests that follow cash grabbing.
Tapasvi Jun 16, 2022 @ 12:28am
Retro or not, most games are always trash. It was always like this. Same thing with movies.

Outstayed whose welcome? They don't exist just for one person.
