Some people just REALLY want to win. Some people really want the prize, somple people may simply want the recognisiton or something else. Short answer - there is NO one reason, just a multitude of similar ones.
I personally cheat like a bastard but I would never ever in a multiplayer game because it would just ruin it completely. It's not fun, and that's all I'm after in a game - fun.
Some of it isd affected by the culture too. You may commonly see things like countries where PC ownership isn't a major thing, and PC Bangs are a thing. The price of entry to a game is cheap so they will set up dispoable accounts and cheat.
Again there's many answers to this and it is not something exclusively to gaming. Every single sport has it's history.
When i noticed that, i always made sure i was in front of him. So he could not hit anybody.
He was complaining.
Then he left.
It varies, as I said. But it doesn't matter as knowing how it happens doesn't change a thing about being able to fix it.
For the cases where obvious hacks are being used, so for example where you have an FPS player running about faster than it is possible to move and one shoting everyone, it is done to spoil other peoples fun, like the kid that is jealous when seeing others playing together with a ball instead of asking to join steals the ball and kicks it over a fence so they can't play any more - this is then a type of sociopathical behaviour, or antisocial personality disorder.
For the cases where more subtle hacks are used to gain advantage over others where the user there can be much more complex motivations at work, a couple I can think of:
-People that assume everyone else is cheating*, and they feel they are just levelling the playfield by also cheating themselves
-People that have the attitude that winning is everything, and the ends justify the means, so then cheating is just a method to help them win. This can be a broad cultural norm, or in individuals it seems to frequently be paired with trying to hide a lack of self confidence or as a (not usually very effective) way of propping up someone's self esteem, obviously any benefits that might have accrued being undermined because even if no one else finds out they were cheating, they know they were.
*This is often indicative of someone that isn't very good at the game in question, as lack of skill in an activity also tends to also be paired with lack of skill at judging what it means to be good at it, similar to how many bad drivers think they are good drivers as they shift the blame to other driver(s) nearby for their own frequent mistakes and bad judgements
For example, China. Their society is more, well, selfish, to be not too finer a point on it. Doesn't mean EVERYONE is like that, but with the way the CCP has run things and without going into detail, it's made it a very "get it while you can" type of society.
So, you have situations where you have people who will go to PC Bangs, pay for the time and create an account to cheat on. Cheatin isn't seen so much as a taboo, so it's no skin off their nose.
Just something else to bear in mind.
Some people are just jerks.
i'd say the more tl;dr explanation is small pp energy got to them and they gotta cope
