Don't Starve

Don't Starve

Why do people find Don’t Starve so hard?!?
Don’t Starve was only hard on my first day playing. After that, the set of rules was pretty clear, and staying safe was the easiest thing ever. All you have to do to survive is follow 3 distinct rules:

1. Make tools and machines with spare items.
2. Avoid the dark, and any monsters as well as structures they live in. (If you can not fight them.)
3. Plant fruit and seeds to have a continuous food source.

That’s it. Every time I play, the game gets more drab, because surviving follows a cycle. Here’s what every single day looks like:
-I walk out of my hay fort, and collect supplies.
-I run away from unexpected demons and monsters easily.
-I continue to collect supplies, crafting a torch for later.
-Night falls, and I activate my torch and go back home to hide in my fort.

The vicious cycle continues day by day. This begs the question: why is this game known for being hard when it really is not?

right-click on Don't Starve in your Library.. then pick "View Forum" and post there :) Altho it's probably okay to do your topic here. You just might get a better response on the Don't Starve Forum where everyone actually owns that game

i think Don't Starve is both hard AND easy.
If you play it super safe (like you seem to play it), then ya.. it can be a bit easy...
But.. if you play it more daring.. try to explore more... and take more risks, then it can be a bit harder and more rewarding at times ^.^

for me the game is scary tho because i'm afraid of the dark. Hehhe. Even in video games >.<

It depends on the character. SOme characters have a harder time and in many cases the random map can be very unforgiving.. Really it's more the unpredictability. Plus there's the whole sanity thing.

This^

Woody is a great example, he can easily solo a crapton of enemies, events and abuse the Hunger/Sanity mechanic because of his abilities... granted you still need to be somewhat good at the game for this.

However it sounds like you've never actually done the harder stuff or gotten to the "Boss" events. Hounds tend to kill off and be an "impossibru!" challenge for a lot of people and that's only, what?, 10 Days in?

You got the Caves, Season Bosses, actually beating the Story to unlock Max and then beating it with Max to get "The real ending!" etc. etc. I mean it does get difficult or down right brutal if you are playing on Default Settings and "actually playing". At the end of the day it is a sandbox game though. Just chilling around in a self-sustaining area and of course the game is going to be easy, you aren't actually *doing* anything lol.

But I generally agree, people tend to hype the difficulty up a bit.

Ever got to winter? Summer? Ever got a deerclops spawn in your base?

>hay fort
>still using a torch not a miners hat or lantern

Is this a troll post?
Yes there are parts of it that are repetitive but you build towards your own personal goals. Have you mined the entire cave and ruins? Have you done all the cool farms and exploits to make the game easier? Have you connected your world to shipwrecked and dominated there too? It's not about building mega bases if you don't want to (i hate them). It's about preparation and planning for the worst. In ROG you could try to run from every boss monster because you're tired of dying to them because you haven't learned to kite yet. Eventually you will take more risks and kite every boss in the game. I've seen one player with 2k days in both ROG/SW and they encountered unexpected death and almost lost the world because they didn't prepare enough.

There is definitely a high learning curve in this game.

One of my fav don't starve videos:

Lol I'm confident you haven't lived through a winter yet.

Sanity, bosses, season hazzards, Unexpected and unlucky huge swarm of hounds.
There is more than just hunger, darkness and resources that can knock down less experimenced players.

I hate the hounds, but I found outthat an easy way to get rid of them is to set them on fire, and since then, they haven't botthered me that much. You're right that I don't like to take unnecesary risks when playing though.

Hay walls are an unnessecary risk, especially if you have flaming hounds running around.

Also your vegetarian diet won't work during winter. Berry bushes, gardens, grass and twigs stop growing. Ponds also freeze over. Spiders drop a lot of necessary resources, don't avoid them. Tentacles are your friends too, but better not overstay your welcome. Introduce your hound friends to your tentacle friends. It will be a nice party with many parting gifts.
i think it's only hard starting off because there's no real tutorial for the game. It's one of those games that you're thrown into and have to learn as you play.

In the process you die over and over again and have to learn from your mistakes (especially on default settings with lower resources).

But in the end after a few playthroughs you should be fine especially if you have a way to respawn after death which is easier done in Don't Starve Together with allies using the telltale heart. But I personally think Shipwrecked is the hardest (depending on what character you play as of course...)

Can be hard or easy, depending on your approach to it. I always play as wilson and always 'Hard Core' i.e. when I die I'm dead and delete that game to start over. It's amazing what things can kill you and a lot of them are laughable.

My most hilarious death recently (at 134 days) was while feeding cooked monster meat to birds a pengull ran to steal the output egg and as I reached for it I accidently 'Attacked' it and consequentially was killed by the entire rookery.

Was killed in a game a few days ago as a 'Tree Guardian' spawned on my first day, and I didn't have enough cones to pacify it or resources to make torches to get through the night.

You know with a log suit an entire penguin herd is an easy target, right? I would have murdered them all if they were near base.
@OP have you ever killed a rock lobster with an axe? Didn't think so. Ever kill a beefalo? Hay walls says you haven't gotten much into the game. The game gets truly terrifying when you know what lurks around the next corner(I'm talking about you, day 120 hound attacks comming at the same time as bearger!)

I would consider it hard for you if you're always running back to your base when it gets dark. Instead of running away from unexpected demons and monsters that you can't fight, bait them with other mobs to fight.

If you can easily get by all the seasons and caves without spawning in cheats or using easy mods, then maybe it is too easy for you. I wouldn't expect this game to be hard for every single person, especially if they're knowledgeable but that comes with many hours of playing and reading the wikia page of DS/DST
.
Put more hours into the game and explore the seasons and caves. You post in DS but you only have DST. If You're creating the server, make sure you enable caves and leave everything else the way it is...

cuz ur a nub.

i mean that factually not as a jab. you probably grew up in the last few years - decade, and survival games are so much a normal part of the landscape now. But when ds was new, it was one of the first (what was it like, 2011 in beta) and it took a bit of getting used to. also they made changes and updates all the time so you had to get used to different rulesets.

but, idk what you mean by everyone finds it so hard.. everyone does not find it so hard, but some things are hard, and if you deny it, i would just call ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ anyway. but that wont happen and neither of us care so why am i typing this.
