In my impression Valve is getting more and more apathetic in respect of doing anything noteworthy during a sale for fear of some evil genius exploiting the event and having to deal with the disgruntled users.

You can also trade gems for awards.

That is not recommended tho, it's easy to scam that way and you can't put awards in the trade window.
