go to the yourscreenname menu and click Activity then click on groups to see your own groups.
Notice that on the left menu "Your Groups" is selected. If you want to search for new groups click on "Find a Group..."
Type in your search word(s) and choose carefully.
If you wanted to know the decision process for figuring out if I want to join that group its a subject for another thread.
Just mouse over your username at the top center of a Steam page, and you can click on GROUPS. You'll be taken to a list of your groups, and then you can click "Find a Group..." on the left side, like DarkCrystalMethod described.
As for how to decide what groups to join, I generally don't join groups, unless friends tell me about them, these days. I used to search for groups related to some things I'm a fan of.
Just try to avoid getting suckered into joining groups that promise giveaways or other stuff. Some of those groups may be sketchy (not necessarily to you, but sometimes in other ways, such as scamming devs of review copies), and either way, they're probably using these sorts of promises as cheap advertising tactics. I know of one big curator group where the creator got upset that a game went from paid to free.
