Discord Ban Scam (I've mistakenly reported your steam account)
I got baited into this last night, didn't think much of it and blindly followed their instructions, i got sceptical though after they started send screen shots of things that didn't make sense. Unfortunately i lost stuff in he process but recovered my account and went ham on changing all my passwords, and authentication processes etc. changed other passwords to bank details and other personal data. I felt stupid after the fact. Because in the back of my mind i knew they were just scamming me. Spent about 4 hours last night just messing with the scammer because i needed to get something out of it, even if it was just humour.

Don't buy the gift cards they send you links to and send them the code
Don't trade with them
Don't give them personal details or passwords to your steam or anything else for that matter.

A discord user form a mutual server will contact you saying they accidentally reported your account, this is not the case they haven't and it's a scam.

They will get you to contact a friend that is a valve employee ( they are not a Valve Employee)

once you have contacted the second user, this user will tell you that there are glitch purchases on you account and in order to remove the ban you must buy steam wallet gift cards and send them the code to validate the glitch purchases... THERE A NO GLITCH PURCHASES (remember that)
If you don't believe their credibility they will send you a authenticity of account screenshot (note these are fake) they will also send a link to a valve employee account on steam (note that at this stage they are lying to you aswell)

Don't trust the internet Kids
Pending bans don't exist on steam
If steam was going to ban you, It's is an immediate thing and should consider your account lost at that point.

"On discord"

It's a scam. Report them ON DISCORD, and report any other accounts they point you toward, as those will also be the scammer.

Why do you along with others I have read over the weeks get scammed, this is steam and has nothing to do with Discord. Just delete it or report and let the Devs of steam deal with it.

OP if you cared to check BEFORE posting you'd see many of the same posts as yours just this very week, and there's many more going back years. In short, we know, and sadly it serves very little purpose trying to advise others here (though I respect the altruism).

The sad fact is that only a tiny fraction of a tiny fraction use these forums compared to the millions of accounts that are live. By nature the people who get scammed may be inexperienced and/or ones that don't read much anyway, so you're never going to find them. Basically, your posting here is a bit like selling coals to Newcastle.

Like I mentioned in the other thread, these sorts of threads do help some people. Probably doesn't make a *big* dent, but any little bit helps, I'd say.

Which is what I keep saying but you seem to keep thinking I mean COMPLETELY useless. and strawmanning me. I wish you'd stop it.

Look, I don't mean to antagonize you, so I don't know why you keep being so inexplicably agitated about this.

But, no, I'm not strawmanning you, considering that:

You did say "you're never going to find them", and then followed it up with an analogy underscoring the uselessness. Oh, also, "it serves very little purpose".

I think we both fundamentally agree that the effect of such threads is small, so I'm not sure what you're so worked up about. It's like your point is "It has very little effect", and then I come along and say "well, it still has some", and you misrepresent my point to claim that I'm misrepresenting yours. This is just, sorta surreal.

someone said they accidentally reported you so you gave them all of your account info?

The scam involves user A saying "I accidentally reported you" and then telling you to clear it up with user B, a fake admin who pretends to be in a position of authority and asks you for your account information.

There are other variants but this is the gist of it.

The scam hijacks the sense of shock that one might get in trouble, especially for something one hasn't done, and thus one feels the need to clear it up with an authority figure.

And lo and behold, here comes an authority figure! Well, a fake one.

i wish users read each other stories instead of outright ignoring them, getting scammed anyway and then another day, another story of another scam. You'd think people would learn from past failures.. but nope.
