First off, Steam NEEDS no more than 90% of your hard drive used. If you use more than that it WILL start behaving wonkily like you experienced. You can even find it starts downloading updates in the wrong drive.
On top of this, you MUST allow around THREE times the total file size within that space. So if you're downloading a 30GB game, you should have AT LEAST 120GB that won't take you over that 90%. This is because all Steam games are encrypted, and compressed, and they need workspace to unpack it all before writing.
So this is where a lot of users fall flat because they run their drives to the limit.
But that's the point isn't it?
If it's 40 GB, then you need to allow 120GB for the download, unpacking and wworkspace. And that 120GB should ALSO be accounted for in the 90% part.
So you didn't answer my question - does this, even when that 120GB is accounted for, still mean that the remaing space you have left is NO MORE than 90%?
That's the important part. It doesn't matter one bit if it's enough to install the game. Both these criteria need to be met.
If you can confirm this, then I can move on with other suggestions.
I allowed over 300gb space to a 30gb game isnt that enough? I mean what you mean by allow? doesnt it take its space automaticlyif there is over 120gb left?
I think that answers the question. BUt I'll explain things a little better.
£00 GB for a 30GB game IS enough. It just needs THREE times the size to do it's unpacking as I said.
Let me try to nail it down by this example.
I have a hard drive, say, that is 1TB. I have a few games installed on it, and I wish to download DIRT Rally at 30GB. I look and I have 130GB left. THat is NOT enough, simply because allowing 3 times the 30GB is 120GB, and removing that 120GB from the 130GB means you don't have 90% space remaining so Steam will not work correctly and do weird stuff like this.
If in your case, you have 250GB free, and 120GB (for the download) takes that down to 130GB, then you're getting close to 90% (which would be 100GB on a 1TB drive) but it should be fine.
If that's the case then it's something else.
So first question, have you looked in the DIRT Rally forums here to see if this is a common or known issue?
Also, what EXACTLY is the error?
Error writing to disk normally means you don't have enough space or the drive is going wonky.
I've noticed a possibility of things going wonky with SSDs, but I think yours is a regular mechanical Drive?
There is one way to count this space thing out for good as the issue. Try dumping a load of games or at least make enough space to be ridiculous onto some other drive or storage medium. Then try again.
If it still doesn't work when you've got WAY over the recommended space then it's probably not going to be that issue and we can discount it.
Yes, but the point is we CANNOT discount the problem until we make SURE it's not that - this is simple process of elimination.
Sometimes weirdness happens as drives and computers differe greatly and Valve can't possibly account for this.
So this is why we need to make an example where we can put this issue to bed and focus on something else.
OS (Windows Vista, SuSE Linux) , RAM (8GB ECC), Video Card and VRAM, CPU brand and type (i7, Dual Xeon, PIII) Is it a Desktop, Server, Laptop, 1-5+ Hard drive(s), RAID, IDE, SCSI, SATA, SSD Brand/Type, etc.
And if you know, how long have you owned your system, or how new or old is your system.
Are you the original owner or second/third-hand, did you build it.

No because as I said, it's not an exact science because there's myriad different configurations possible. Valve CANNOT set anything up for that.
This is basic troubleshooting. You don't just ASSUME something is discounted because it doesn't fit the rules, you TEST it to as far as you can to make SURE it isn't that, or you'll waste time barking up the wrong tree.
THat's why we should make sure it ISN'T this. It's an easy method - just move some files temporarily. If you make a stupid amount of space and it starts working that tells you that this IS the right direction. If it doesn't, then we can then discount it and move on.
Moving on before we're sure just helps nobody.
Squirrel's geenrally right though - we should be looking at more details about your setup too.
We'll get to that tomorrow then.

And my pc is bought pre build from store.. So i didnt build it, and im the first owner..
