You can put a wrong one like most scum do, but if you plan on getting yourself hacked: put a fake address. Since a lot of time.

Since January for the store... https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=6112-TDHB-4392

The Market now requires it too, since the beginning of May.

The info is only for you and Valve to know.

FYI... I had to personally ask a Valve employee on his social media account to request the KB article for billing info back in Jan because they "forgot" to make one. I did ask again about updating it for the Market a couple weeks ago. Still no response.

We've already seen account locks for providing false information.

Yeah, I;'d seriously ignore this post.

Faking addresses and so on is a great way to risk getting your account frozen.

Falsifying that information is fraud, so yeah, don't do that, as it's MONUMENTALLY STUPID.

There's at least one known case of an account getting suspended for fraud, that is providing a wrong address. Or, to be precise, I've seen such a case personally on the forum myself, dude did exactly that and got their account suspended, as they claim, for fraud. Which faking your billing information actually is.

Except that providing a fake billing address is indeed fraud. That's how certain kinds of real-world fraud work: you get someone else's credit card, buy goods online, provide THEIR billing address (afterall, why should you provide yours) and have the goods sent somewhere where you can pick them up.
Bruh, you gotta think outside of that tiny box you're thinking it for once!

Do you really think that Steam is the only shop on the world that is? Do you really think e-commerce is the only way to buy something? You coming up with a scenario with a non-fraud fake address doesn't mean there's no fraud with fake addresses!

By the way, it's not up for discussion anyway. You know, there's that concept of "federal law" and by federal law in civilized countries, fake addresses are fraud.

providing a fake address in and of itself is not a crime.
a fake address can be used to commit fraud but providing it is not itself fraud.
doubt me?
cite the legal code. and in the spirit of generosity ill let you pick the laws of ANY country, ANYWHERE in the world to go ahead and pull that legal code from.

Shooting a gun in itself isn't a crime. There may be absolutely valid uses cases for a gun. The abuse potential of guns is huge though and the valid uses cases can be dealt with by less abusable means.

So in many countries (excluding the ones ran but it's weapons lobby), you better have a license, or you'll get arrested for simply having a gun.

It's exactly the same topipc, faking your address have a valid use case, but the potential of abuse is huge and those valid uses cases can be served by other means.
