Our wives are not "gamers" so, the easier it is to get into, the better.

Else there are lots of board game adaptations and originals in this style:

Although finding a game that supports hot seat and online MP simultaneuosly will be pretty hard.
Plus, I upgraded the laptop to Catalina, and apparently this games won't run on it.
Also, consider racing -- my suggestion being Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, for two reasons: first, it's fun, not a simulation. Second. you can combine splitscreen and online multiplayer (although you might need controllers to really use splitscreen...), so two licenses should suffice. On the downside, it only has a -17% sale[isthereanydeal.com] right now, possibly a bit more if the coupon codes work -- but that's always an issue if you want to get something "now" and can't wait for a sale.
I suspect your main problem will be to find games that can handle multiple people on one box, and also use online multiplayer at the same time... and also handle 4 players (Trine might be able to combine the modes; I don't know. But it's 3 player...).
So,
Ticket to Ride - based on the actual board game, and it's a truly excellent game about using the luck of card drawing to make train transport routes across America in the grand old time of the 1800s or so. Very addictive.
Carcassonne = also based on the board game. A wonderful game where your "cards" are tiles that can be placed to form settlements and you try to connect them to each other, in order to have the most population points to win the game. Similarly addictive.
You dont even need to purchace it, just google and use first link. Steam version gives you Steam-exclusive skin and some coins, thats all. Both Steam and browser (free) use same servers.

Armello is awesome turn-based board game, but not sure if you can play with 4 players on 2 devices.
P.S. Fanatical [www.fanatical.com]has 75% discount on Civ6
Or you can look for Civ 5 Complete Edition keys, its around 10-15$.
