What's your definition of "gamer"?
I started gaming when I was 6 probably with roller coaster tycoon as my first game ever. Then when I was 8 my cousin introduced me to runescape, eventually maplestory, countless other online games mmo/rpg and I was hooked. I've played a lot, of many varieties of games, solely on PC, definitely a lot on steam. I have a maxed RS3 account which I know is not very impressive now a days but hey childhood dream fulfilled, stashed away for reminiscing. I definitely consider myself a gamer.

Today I was talking to my friend and next thing you know he's like oh yea you're not a gamer. I was so offended. I was like wtf is a gamer to you then. He said a gamer must play competitively. I'm salty guys.

So what do you consider as a gamer? People who do candy crush / phone gaming? casual only? competitive only? pin ball machine-ing? virtual chat worlds? choose your stories? people who have those custom set ups? club penguin? cookie clicker?

A gamer does not have to play competitively! A Gamer is anyone who plays games... pretty simple. I have been gaming since the early 80's, owned and still own pretty well all the console's, pcs and all the games that i have ever bought. Am i "hardcore"?.... some people think so.. i dont. But ya... i consider myself a "Gamer".
A person who likes to play games.

What someone calls you doesn't matter, why do you want to be branded as something based on what you buy anyway? If someone said I'm not a gamer my response would be "ok"

However when the far left media calls people who play mobile games gamers and then use that to try and force publishers to make console and pc game to pander to those people, and not the ones that actually buy them it's a problem.

10-15 years ago the gaming community was great, then the far left game journalists ruined it by trying to turn everyone against everyone else and ruining games they didn't agree with.

The "far left media" does not force game developers/publishers to make mobile games on PC and console. "Far left game journalists" are not "ermagerds ruining games." Something, something, far left! Good grief, lol.

In short:
1) A person who plays any kind of game.
2) A person whose hobby is video games.
3) A person who games the system.

I never really thought about (3), though. The other two are rather obvious.
A person who
- is trying to justify their superiority through video games
- lives on the internet rather than the RL
- gets outraged about the slightest thing without any rationale
- is not learning anything from their actions and
- wants others to take responsibility for them

... and then there are people who just like to play videogames.

Says you.

Isn't having your own opinion fun?
Just a casual gamers at very least.
The safest and most acceptable definition is probably "a person whose main hobby is video games." My own definition for it, however, is more like: "a person whose main hobby is video games and is enthusiastic/passionate about them."
I feel like you can like playing video games without being a "gamer" and when I ask myself what I think the difference between a "gamer" and "someone who just likes playing video games" is, the answer that usually comes to mind is the level of enthusiasm/passion they have for video games.

That's just my personal take on the word, though.

Wow, a lot of people are quick to discard tabletop, board, card, pen-and-paper, and quite likely other categories I’m overlooking, rather carelessly. I’m surprised Dungeons and Dragons, especially, is getting no mention herein.

Don't get me wrong.. i have a huge collection of board games as well. Also a MASSIVE collection of AD@D 2nd edition.
A person whose hobby involves playing games, is how I'd define it. I don't see any need or point in making it some exclusive club. If you want that you can use the proper noun and/or adjective. "I'm a pc gamer" I'm a board gamer" etc. etc.

A cultural identity built around insular, exclusive thinking, insecurity, incredibly ugly aesthetic preferences, overconfidence, and an internalisation of corporate advertising as personal values.

I'm not going into politics here because that's not why I'm active on Steam.

However... journalists merely report. So if the community is then gullible enough to follow up on whatever nonsense the media is reporting then I have to disagree that the community was great. They weren't great; because if they were then they wouldn't have allowed themselves to get pandered to like that.

Besides, gamersgate showed otherwise IMO.
