Well, share what you consider cult classics, because I'm lost...
To be specifc: none of them are.
Cult classic doesn't mean "must have". As a matter of fact those two are somewhat exclusive.
Cult classic means older stuff that has acquired a dedicated fandom/subculture around itself. And usually the term is not used for mainstream, which a must-have would be.
And there is no such thing as a must-have in entertainment.
Don't Starve
Left 4 Dead 2
Castle Crashers
Stardew Valley
Etc...
Right now, I think "Steam" is considered to be a gaming hub for PC gaming and to me I noticed many users post on this community forum looking for help for non-Steam games.
It's like they haven't heard of Origin, Uplay, Battle.net, etc., ...I'm guessing they probably don't know about these other sites, it's like "Steam" comes to their mind first.
I wouldn't be surprised in our future if the word "Steam" becomes synonymous with PC gaming, similar to making paper copies at the office as "can you Xerox these?"
I have the Half-life and Portal series in my library, I don't play them but I bought them because I wanted to share in the solidarity with Steam gamers, especially the old timers who remember the early days of Steam (See: older Steam Community Mods and 13+ year badge Steam users)
There are a lot of indies out there but many haven't really perked my interest.
There's several indies I do find and buy, but I prefer games produced from large studios or publishers.
I do have indie games in my library and when they (or when that one person) releases new DLC.. I'll buy extra content, it's my way of giving support to the underdogs.
Although, one game does comes to mind and that's Stardew Valley, to me nearly everyone on my friends list have it and play it. now and then... as for myself, I haven't bought it nor played it.
Maybe I will in the future.
I guess, if there is a must-have Indie, I would say Stardew Valley among a few other games like.. ..which I can't remember now.
