So sick of Rock, Paper, Shotgun spam.
Seriously, it's in the news section of almost every one of my games.
It's not just once though the same article is spammed like 2 or 3 times in a row pushing any dev news or updates off screen.

I wonder which games you're referring to.

I see them less often now, either I stopped caring/paying attention or I don't read game news anymore. Either way, that's "Rock, Paper, Spam" mate.
That's nice. I enjoy the spam. :joyUB:
RPS are great, but letting people customise the news feed is a good idea regardless.
I never readed them, they only appear in library tab, not activity. Clicked on some of them, all good articles. Havent find a single bad RPS article yet.

How is it spam if you dont get notifications about them and they are not in activity tab? If you want news only about specific game, press follow button in store page.

@topic
Those stuff should be optional because most of their "news" aren't game related. Meaning here, talk there... As example, even if they were in my language it would be just as annoying as now.

It's simple, no game has tons of news but this place is filled with subjective, unimportant stuff and spam. RPS, PCgamer or whatever....

Personally i blocked those sites completly, but because they're hardcoded, it's not so easy to block content here (Steam).

Copied example scheme from library entry for World of Final Fantasy:
steamcommunity-a.akamaihd.net/news/newsforapp/v0001/?appid=552700&count=3&maxlength=300&format=vdf

Code:

"title" "World of Final Fantasy is still adorable and is out today"
"url" "http://store.steampowered.com/news/externalpost/rps/2486412956119422701"

It s a spin-off that celebrates the long-running JRPG series by turning its myriad characters and beasties into tiny ch..."

Well... on the plus side... there's no ads on it. They are serving up their content ad-free when ads are their life blood.

You forget steam integrated Google Analytics which is loaded on every site here and with a click on their sites/links dozens of advertising which are loaded too...long live the seo business~ Of course the news self are advertising too for them... And for users with the steam client version they're opened within steam, so no adblock works.

Just tested... about 13 tracking and advertising services

A small selection
0914.global.ssl.fastly.net
ad.doubleclick.net
www.googletagservices.com
www.google-analytics.com
s.skimresources.com
cdn.gamer-network.net
s0.wp.com
apis.google.com
rps-uk.rockpapershotgun.com

Would be nice to rid off this stuff but that remains presumably as a dream >.<

The best way is to block their domains, block advertising and tracking stuff. No visitors, no data, no money... and someday they will vanish... Easy in theory ~ In these times the consumers must fight by their own.

Actually I had this question too. Is RPS somehow affiliated with Valve?

I agree. They once tagged the game "Squad" when a developer named "Squad" was doing something, but they didn't care because they probably got more traffic out of it.

Every so often they'll write a "have you played" or just echo some sale that's going on so they can appear in the news feed for a bunch of games (which includes the details page in your library).

I'm not anywhere sure about this, but is it not up to each dev to put it in news section? It looks most as free advertising to me and i have not had any problem with it showing up, the few times i have seen it. Read some, most been good, about mods, updates, and "the have you played".
Just as an example for Wonderboy 3: Dragons Trap

There's intentional spam by Rock, Paper, Shotgun using one article 3 times to push other news off screen.

-Just a minor edit, I live in Australia and we don't even have black friday sales.

You know RPS doesn't actually publish to Steam, right? They just publish articles on their website, and Steam syndicates them into those news feeds. If things are getting tripled, that's an issue with the syndication process. Maybe they updated the article and Steam's system took that as a whole new post or something?

Why do I have to sift through a ton of bull to get news about a game?

Because the devs post articles when they have nothing to talk about.

Not at all accurate.

If you go to the news section (on Store, below Wishlist), it shows the various channels that steam uses - there are the first bunch by the game devs and steam itself (split into categories), then My games (which is just all news for all your games in one place), and then various syndicated news feeds, a few of which are just Valve game blogs, but also Eurogamer, Kotaku, RPS, and a couple of others.

I think the reason RPS shows up so much is they tend to do a lot of retrospective and broad ranging articles, and tend to tag those articles with all the games mentioned even in passing, and they generate quite a lot of articles per day, so even spread out over a lot of games they come up fairly frequently, whereas the other news feeds seem to mostly do reviews/spotlights on single games so are unlikely to show up many times for the same game.

I guess what the OP would like is something like adding some checkboxes next to each channel to filter out ones they aren't interested in.
