XBox360 (or XBox1, probably). Be careful with the 360, though -- you need the "wired" one if you want to use USB, as the cable on the wireless one is just for charging; and you need a special receiver (included in the wireless "for PC" package) for the wireless one. I don't know about wireless XBox1, but to my knowledge they all work on USB.

Why XBox? Because they work "out of the box", and many games give you XBox prompts. Even games like Neptunia, which have never gotten an XBox-release, are giving you XBox prompts on the PC version.

I use the Steam controller and an Xbox 360, both work perfectly.

I have the 360 and no issues. They are recognised by both Steam and Windows. They are easy to use, no rocket science and good. That's my advice. Maybe xbx1 too if you like the cross and then wired of wireless will depend on your money and tastes.

Disable Steams input mapper. Its useless (for XInput pads) as games generally support XInput natively and yet enabled by default.
:teddy_talk: I use both Xbox One and Xbox 360 Controllers with my PC
I can use these controllers with Windows 7 and Windows 10
USB wired Xbox controllers (for me) worked as Plug and Play

For wireless controllers, Xbox One has a few flavors, some don't have Bluetooth, nonetheless here a link for Bluetooth Xbox One controller.

If you have Bluetooth built-in with your PC or a Bluetooth USB device
Xbox One "Bluetooth" Controllers
"On Bluetooth-supported controllers, the plastic around the Xbox button is part of the face of the controller. On controllers without Bluetooth, the plastic around the Xbox button is part of the top, where the bumpers are."

I have a PC USB Wireless Adapter for my older Xbox One Wireless Controller
Xbox One Wireless PC USB Adapter

I also have a PC USB Wireless Adapter for my Xbox 360 Wireless Controller

And one more thing, if you do buy PC USB adapters for your Xbox controllers, buy only OEM (Original Equipment Manufactured) the Official Microsoft brand and avoid third party devices as I've encountered many connection issues with non-OEM third party adapters.

A logitech F310 also works fine and is seen as an Xbox controller. Has the same style as a Playstation controller too, if you are used to that style.

https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-940-000110-Gamepad-F310/dp/B003VAHYQY

Currently $15 on Amazon (USA).

:teddy_talk: I meant the Xbox adapters and in regarding controllers, I think most wired third-party controllers work well.

e.g. PDP Rock Candy Xbox 360 Wired Controller, Blueberry Boom, 037-010-NA-BL
