Why XBox? Because they work "out of the box", and many games give you XBox prompts. Even games like Neptunia, which have never gotten an XBox-release, are giving you XBox prompts on the PC version.
I can use these controllers with Windows 7 and Windows 10
USB wired Xbox controllers (for me) worked as Plug and Play
For wireless controllers, Xbox One has a few flavors, some don't have Bluetooth, nonetheless here a link for Bluetooth Xbox One controller.
If you have Bluetooth built-in with your PC or a Bluetooth USB device
Xbox One "Bluetooth" Controllers
"On Bluetooth-supported controllers, the plastic around the Xbox button is part of the face of the controller. On controllers without Bluetooth, the plastic around the Xbox button is part of the top, where the bumpers are."

I have a PC USB Wireless Adapter for my older Xbox One Wireless Controller

I also have a PC USB Wireless Adapter for my Xbox 360 Wireless Controller

And one more thing, if you do buy PC USB adapters for your Xbox controllers, buy only OEM (Original Equipment Manufactured) the Official Microsoft brand and avoid third party devices as I've encountered many connection issues with non-OEM third party adapters.

A logitech F310 also works fine and is seen as an Xbox controller. Has the same style as a Playstation controller too, if you are used to that style.
