Ammo calibre 45-70 is only available in Far Harbor, the DLC region.
There are multiple merchants there who sell it.
It cant be bought or found in the Boston main game area, at least not without mods.
You can still find weapons for it though.

I have Far Harbor... can I go there get some and go back to the main game
and have it stay in my inventory? And why have weapons in the main game if the main game
doesnt have the ammo? Is this a lame trick to get you to get DLC? Guess I will venture off
to Far Harbor and find out, but it`s annoying to have 2 Leg * rifles and no ammo. Thanks Ogami.

Yes, you can keep it. No, if you didn't have Far Harbor, you would never have found the rifle. And you'll notice, you never find that rifle as a NON-legendary, do you? It's just a stupid decision by the Beth to add it to the Legendary pool without restriction while not adding it to at least vendor lists. Same thing with the handmade rifle from Nuka-World DLC.

As soon as the DLCs are installed, their legendary variants are added in the Commonwealth legendary loot table, but not their standard counterparts, same goes for armor.

As for the 'trick' to get you to the DLC... there's absolutely no reason you'd want to miss Far Harbor, ever

Thanks Chaosium... I`m playing through the main game and will do the DLC latter.
Just odd you can find weapons, but NO ammo. Perhaps I will start FH just to get some ammo.
Aso TY no1schmo .... your answer pretty much covers it... guess I will stop midgame and go
to FH to get some ammo... lame they have a weapon in the main game but NO ammo.:steamfacepalm:

When you installed Far Harbour, it updated the lists the random legendary generation uses and added the new weapons. If you didn't have the Far Harbour DLC installed, they would never turn up at all.

It's just a quirk of the game's design that makes it much harder to have random legendary items selected by location than most other things (I could explain in more detail if necessary).

I remember I found some 45-70 on Carlos in Diamond City and KLEO in Goodneighbor. However if you don't want to purchase ammo in packs of 8-15 you'll need to go to Far Harbor

How sure are you of your memory on that? I don't remember anyone called Carlos being in Diamond City.

I don't recall ever seeing either one of them selling .45-70 ammunition (or harpoons, for that matter).

Went with Arturo from Diamond city, he had 10 rounds:

Went to KLEO, she also had 10 rounds:

Aaaand that's it, no other merchant in the whole commonwealth had any .45-70 rounds

I have not even started Far from Home with that character, by the way.

I went once, did the content. But in the intervening years I have never gone back. I keep meaning to go as BTI has some gnomes there but....♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ I can't do it. While Nuka world...I can't wait to go in every playthrough. Maybe I am just simple and Nuka world offers a no holds barred Raider Kill fest. While Far Harbour I just can't deal with em....they are all Aholes!

Edit: For the OP, If you have the contraptions DLC then I recommend a mod that adds DLC Calibers to the Ammo Machine.

I'm like 99% sure that if you are finding these rounds in the Commonwealth, it must be a mod.
