Does showing people the forum rules and guidelines count as backseat moderating?
Seems stupid if so.

for some people it does, for some not.
No, backseat moderating is trying to enforce the rules yourself.
Simply reminding people of the rules is not enforcing them.
How WOULD you even try to enforce? Not like we can ban or censor.

Witch hunting would be an example.

Wanting to get someone banned, so you rally a bunch of people to report their account in an attempt to make a moderator think the user has done something to warrant getting a bunch of reports and ban them.

That's the thing, when people advertise their server in the gmod forums i usually tell them to go advertise in the right subforum (or don't advertise at all if they're advertising a discord server or steam group), they usually resort to "stop backseat moderating u dont know wut ur talking about"

Yeah, people always say that when they break the rules.
It's like if someone tells you they're going to rob a store, then you tell them that's illegal, then they get all defensive and say, "Stop backseat policing. You're not a cop."
You could always report them without saying a word. Maybe they'll learn that way.

Wouldn't exactly say that. A person can't learn something if they don't know they're doing something wrong. A guiding hand also prevents the majority of threads, like "Why did my thread get deleted?" or "Why did I get this ban?". People need to know in order to reflect.

I agree with this statement wholly.

Threats and the like would also count as backseat moderation though.
Not half as stupid as taking people who advertise their servers seriously. :DEALWITHIT:

Eh it's mostly annoying because people are often saying so in context of acting like they own the forums and stuff they don't want to be seeing on them shouldn't be on them because they, personally, do not want to see it. Basically a form of hiding behind one's big brother.

Tho of course, I am a hypocrite, and I do sometimes respond "Hey, no backseat moderating!"
I always remind people of the rules when I observe them breaking the rules. I get called a backseat moderator a lot. I also get called a bootlicker and other worse things along that line.

As long as you are only reminding and not going further than that, you should be fine. I have never been warned for reminding other users which specific rule(s) they were violating.
