50mbs for me in US. 1.2mbs is absolute garbage you need to get better speed bruh especially for gaming. You want at least 50mbs and a decent router (N600 or ABOVE for high intensive wireless gaming an AC router would be best). Unless it is just yourself 25mbs might be okay if you have just your PC wired/wireless and no other devices hogging the bandwidth..but for best performance you want at least 50mbs... there are packages out there that are offered where you can get -just- the high speed internet. That's what I was rocking with RCN (east coast) at 45$ a month + free land line/long distance.
I don't need cable seeing as most of the TV stations you can get free on the internet (history, discovery, travel) through website and I have Hulu/netflix. :>

Check your router. If you have multiple people using same wireless network make sure you have a dual band. It divides the e-net "traffic" up better. Yknow, slow lanes, fast lanes, for gaming online you need to be in the speedy lane and not get caught behind grandma's 1985 toyota camry (farmville on facebook). ^_^

60Mb/s (Megabits a second) as stated by my ISP, Comcast.

7.4 MB/s (Megabytes a second) as shown through my Steam downloads.

Remember, 8 Mb = 1 MB.
5.11Mb/s
In the U.S.

I get 5 MB/s DL speed when I am home alone and nobody else is on the network.

Usually I get 500 KB/s to 1 MB/s.
Whether that's "average" or "standard" depends on what you're comparing it to.

If you're comparing it to the fastest standard residential broadband packages, then that's probably low unless you're in a rural area.

If you're comparing it to actual usage of, say, someone who frequently uses shared wireless in places like campuses and coffee shops, then that's a pretty good speed.

Remember, 8 Mb = 1 MB.

8 bit is 1 byte

1024 Bytes = 1 KiloByte
1024 KiloBytes = 1 MegaByte
1024 MegaBytes = 1 GigaByte
1024 GigaBytes = 1 TeraByte

i think they are same with mb it mean 8 time bigger right ?

The average for Steam-users for the total of the US is 18,3 Mbps. More information here: http://store.steampowered.com/stats/content/ (click on country)
Ooh, that's really nifty. Thanks for the link.

OP: do note, though, that that applies to Steam users only, and presumably download speeds are also only when people download, which is probably disproportionately when they have better internet (e.g. being at home vs. at school). So depending on what number you really want to know, you should be aware of these caveats.

Also, that's an average download speed. I wonder what the median is. I would guess that the median is probably lower, which would mean that the distribution is skewed toward people with relatively low download speeds but just has some very high outliers.
