I will dissent, but with exception...
AAA Dev/Pubs actually do some pretty positive things for the industry.
For one, they're incubators. Do you know why some dev houses get big grants and tax breaks? Because they hire and give a lot of experience to tech-pros. A lot of countries would be very happy to have a goodly number of AAA game companies in their borders - It would give their Universities some place to send graduates. Big Tech creates opportunity for new workers in STEM positions that can get real-world experience. It's a valuable capital improvement for any reegion/nation.
The AAA houses are behemoths. They grow employees. Why? Because they need to support the salaries of upper management and wow the shareholders. But, they also cycle those entry-level positions all the time... Which means a steady stream of hungry IT and Game Coders are out there looking for work... or starting up their own studios, making unicorn investors happy... or not.
The spinoff studios and relationships made while the big AAA's go on feeding as they hemorrhage entry-level employees are valuable. Many great devs come from prior experiences in AAA devpubs.
Tech advances - They happen and they push the industry to reach new heights. There's billions of monies involved, so big hardware is happy to service their needs. All that hardware isn't created because there's nothing available to push it...
But, big AAA companies are often bloated. It's like fifty middle-managers are all looking to build their own empires. The amount of waste generated in some of those places is ridiculous. They're so frantic to "hit it big" on one title that they'll parcel out divisions to work on five different ones at a time. Sure, I wouldn't advise anyone to put all their eggs in one basket, but throwing away money with little to show for it is just as irresponsible.
The funny thing is, the ceiling hasn't been reached, yet - The industry still moves forward pushing new boundaries. There is still lots of room out there. When there isn't and competition starts to get a lot more fierce, maybe some of those big AAA houses will trim some fat and start acting responsibly in a competitive market? (lol?)
Gaming isn't really as "either/or" as many make it out to be. Sure, there's a sweet spot on release, but gamers will still pick up old titles for the first time. A "good game" will eventually get noticed. Flashy games without much meat on them... will fade away.
I dont mean casual in a bad way, these ae just people that want a little bit of fun.
They have a console, maybe a pc but mostly for work reasons.
They buy the same games every year. Cod, soccer, Fifa or pro evo and 2 or 3 other games they personally like.
I have a friend that is a huge diablo fan and when diablo 4 came out I asked him if e is playing. He said what diablo 4?
I said yes, it came out 3-4 months ago... He didnt know.
Another really fun story, I went to a friends house and they were playing pro evo soccer. I didnt know much about the game, but apparently its heavy pay to win with booster packs.
Later another friend came and wantted to play it online. We said no its not fun they will destroy you. Hhe couldnt believe, tried and got destroyed. We explained that you hahve to buy this booster packeds but its not worth it.
He looked at it and said well, 9.99 I can spend that much. Opend one got only trash, another one same trash, lesson learned, 20 bucks down the drain.
The 3 gamers in the room go "told you". the casual goes "oh well, doesnt matter, the 20 bucks were lying around anyway."
This is the reason why onilne a huge ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about a game or company can break out but they still do really well. The bulk of their customers dont care.
Same goes for movies, the Rock is a trash actor that makes trash movies. He apparently is the best payed actor in hollywood. The reason is sooo many people consume that stuff on a throw away basis
We want to thank you for all your support over the years. We want to tell you that you are the reason that we have become so successful.
But, instead of that, we are going to go in a new direction. We are going to pervert and fundamentally destroy all of the stories, characters and experiences you love. Then when you express discontent we will act like you are the aggressors and call you the most horrible and disrespectful things we can dream up. We are going to call you toxic and brand you as nazis and abusers of women and children. If you have any issues or criticisms of our new direction, we will simply ban you from all of the spaces we control, and then unleash our activist hordes to punish any space that allows you to criticize us.
It is a good thing that we are doing this because we are morally superior to all of you chuds. We no longer want you as an audience. We will actively attack you and shame you in order to create as much division and hate as we are able. You must not be allowed to reap peace or enjoyment from our products. You must never be allowed to feel welcome or accepted in our communities. That would be unfair to all of the people who never purchased our games or played them in the past.
You do not deserve our products and you should understand that we no longer consider what you, the toxic fandom, would enjoy. Instead we hire independent organizations at a cost of millions to help us craft stories and narratives that will truly disgust and insult you. These are people who will start fights with you and gaslight you and then ban you when you respond. They are experts in crafting narratives that won't simply bore you or turn you off, they are much more focused than that.
These companies specialize in attacking you with ideologies so hateful that they will upset you at your core. We will call that a good thing and blame you for all the hate we have paid them to create. They will disgust you in a manner so visceral that you will be unable to feel anything but hatred and disgust for the garbage they offer you. If you don't like that, we will promptly ban you. We will try to dox you. We will find you on social media and attack you and everyone and everything you love until you sit down and shut up.
Now man up and buy our games you incel misogynist, racist white male chuds.
Sincerely (Insert Triple A Studio Name Here)
The Rock is the personification of modern "slop" media.
That's a brilliant example of the soulless, corporate mentality of churning out glossy minimum viable products to people who aren't savvy or have the time to find better content.
