That's one thing, but it's not a particularly useful thing to do.
For myself, I look at games (for the most part), not publishers. So, even if I don't like game "A", I might still get game "B" from them.
And really, publishers shutting down multiplayer-servers -- that's never happened before? When you buy a multiplayer-only game, you KNOW that it will become worthless eventually.
Just stop putting money in games that rely too much on online crap.
And support is only being ended now?
A new owner would be in their right to shut off all games and make you buy them again from them if you want them. There would be no legal obligation. Very few games will let you play without Steam installed.
In the long run it seems just a matter of time until they make all the old games unplayable and make you pay-per-play to play in the future. Remember no one will own anything!
Except when they let users host their own. That would be one possible compromise, for studios to be expected to unlock the game when official support ends, providing a reasonable substitute for the original product. It's not crazy.
"But I want to play this game!"
Then understand that you don't own it. Also, simple as.
Then get a big computer and spend big on GoG before that happens.
And it's not just broken games, it's the stupid censorship and anti-consumer practices that are destroying them.
Just look at what happened with Funimation and how they ruined everybody's digital purchases by straight up removing them and people basically wasted their money on their digital purchases (because you don't actually own digital things you just buy the rights to digital things) and what's going to happen is that people are going to start pirating.
And look at Sony adding stupid censorship to their games.
I am thankful that I have a gaming PC and not a PlayStation so I don't have to worry about Sony's BS.
It's sad that this is the future of the world. This world is destroying itself.
I just don't think the younger player base is organized enough to put a stop to what is effectively milking the market.
Besides hacking it's the primary reason I don't do a lot of shooters anymore.
Then all of sudden you'll have a vocal minority(might just be the ones who still play it) voice their opinions on it while everyone else has moved on.
You can't seriously think such a scenario will happen?
If the owner where to do that, the Government would step in. Why? They have kids too and even if they make a lot of money, if Steam just canceled every ones games after switching to a new owner, the government would step in.
In ALL of the Western worlds.
Also the person doing this would ruin Steam forever. Not only would most developers most likely leave due to the massive negative PR from the whole ordeal. But you'll also have a mass exodus of gamers from the platform.
Compared to the realistic scenario that is. Steam is a money printer going BRRRRRRRR. You don't even need to do much with it. Why would you ever destroy that?
