Pokemon Uranium: Did it get what it deserved?
If you haven't heard, there is a mirror game called Pokemon Uranium that has been taken down. (I wonder why, I mean, it's not like Nintendo is practically abusing Copyright Law *cough* MineCraft Wii U: Super Mario Texturepack *cough*), anyways, it was in development for 9 years, and was finally released. However it was taken down (or was it *wink wink nudge nudge*) rather recently, due to unwanted attention. While yes, the idea was a rip-off and some of the Pokemon were not original, it was crafted so well that it looked like an official game. It came with I believe 130+ custom Pokemon, which should've been enough, considering the first Pokemon game had somewhere around that number too. And it was just overall really impressive. I personally think that if the author had left it to the 130 original Pokemon, he might have at least gotten a warning. But I mean come on, the guy made an spent nine years making a clone because he loved those games, and you just smash his dreams into bits? You couldn't be a bit more kinder about it?

So what do you think: Did the guy get what he deserved, or should've the game lived on? Personally, they should've f***ing hired the guy to help make another game.

They need to protect their IP. Wrong way to do it though.
I think they should have hired the guy if anything, or brought the rights to sell the game.
It's just Nintendo's way of protecting their intellectual property

That would've brought a ton of legal issues. Like hiring anyone that made a fan game.

I'll take your word for it, I know next to nothing about copyright laws.

I'm just speculating. Let's say this guy makes a fan-game and doesn't get hired.
Nintendo could go to court for that and it'd be a mess. Frankly, that's just a possibility. If we look at what VALVe does we can also see another perspective of how this should be treated. However, Nintendo's a Japanese company and I'm pretty sure the law's relatively different.
Was the name Uranium completely serious or was it a joke?
Here, let me just rip off Mickey Mouse...

Who's this Disney guy and why am I getting cease and desist letters?
Tbh the custom Made sprites (most) look much better than the current Generation ones at least in my opinion (except a few). So yeah they should hire them instead.
If it was a parody or "based on", with a diffrent name then Pokemon, then it could have been ok (unless he was using some of their assets/ip as well).

As he called it Pokemon, probebly used some of the names a barrowed from the game's them selves, then it does cross the line into a copyright violation, even if it is free.

Reguardless of how long he has been working on it, if Nintendo didn't hear about it until now, then they still have a right to stop it. Same with the Metroid 2 remake.

This isn't abuse of copyright laws, it is proper enforcement of them.

Looks guys a clever person!

If your going to spend 9 years making a clone of a game that you giving for free you should only make it for you and your freinds or ask before starting the project, I ain't no law expert but surely you have to get permission before making a clone of a game?
If they take all the Pokemon references out of it I dont see why they couldn't release their game again. They got what was coming to them though.

Any pokemans that looked similar would also be verboten. He'd be better off making a completely new IP.
Copyright laws are a joke that shutdown talented developers for the sake of profit

If they were so talented, why couldn't they have named it something else and not completely rip off an existing product?
