Why the hell does everyone go nuts over medieval fantasy?
Like the genre has already been exhausted 10 years ago - why are we still going at it?

Edit: Some people seem to think I have a problem with medieval times in general as a setting - I think the medieval times setting is cool, don't get me wrong, but the fantasy often associated with it is the thing I don't understand why people adore the hell out of.

Because swords, sex, death, trolls and violence
modern fantasy seems cooler
dragons + grenades and auto rifles
So has sci-fi.

There isn't a single genre that hasn't been done to death. Some of us just prefer fantasy.

Maybe because many have an interest in it and there's a lot demand for it?

People are getting sick of it, finally.
It's because man-to-man combat wasn't reduced to picking off targets with the aid of horrific death-inducing gunpowder machines from a distance.

There were knights, and chivalry, and honour.

But there was devious cloak and dagger politics and ploys too.

Add to that Tolkien lore, and you get something even more exciting.

Medieval fantasy is probably my favourite setting for an RPG world.

Followed closely by sci-fi, but those titles seem to be making their way in the close future (Piranha Bytes, CDPR etc)
Why the hell do people like things that I don't? Everything should cater to my whims and desires. To me, damn it.
can't wait for Bannerlord RTS has been and gone 20 years ago but they still sell
I'm kind of tired of the romanticising of medieval times on so many games too... But if it is popular then there has to be a reason for it.

I'm more of a fan of the "alternate history" stuff like the fallout series and such.

Personally I'd like to see more use of "Steampunk", or better yet "Dieselpunk".

High seas pirates too, there's only 4 or so games I know of that do that up properly and most of them are from Ubisoft.

Chivalry? You're saying it like it's a good thing. Chivalry was horrible.
Cloak and dagger politics exist and are pretty much omnipresent in the modern world, trust me.

And it's always so overly romanticized too, like the imagination of a young man heading off to enlist during World War 1.

Oh wow, I agree with all of that.
So has nearly every set period. Plus people like playing as knights with swords and shields. Its fun. I for one am tired to guns and future stuff.

Personally though, I'd love to start seeing more games in Feudal Japan. That one of those major time periods that games just don't tackle that much. Which is so strange, considering how interesting it is.

Ditto. Loved Rurouni no Kenshin's take on it.

Total war:Shogun 2 and the expansion served to fill the gap for awhile.

I'm not saying swords and shields can't be fun like - I love games like Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, one of my favorites in general; I'm saying the fantasy and magic crap and generally just you know dragons - the genre being so ridiculous and outlandish is dumb to me.
And I agree, Feudal Japan WAS an interesting time period that games generally don't tend to visit.

and chivalry
Chivalry existed just as much as vampires do today. They were fairytales with an inspirational message, but it never existed as a code knights lived by.

Not to the average Westerner buying games, according to the companies that tried an Oriental setting.
