What are your "red flags" in gaming?
Something that when you see it, it makes you skeptical of a game's success or quality.

Of course they're not 100% accurate, but when you follow the industry for a while, you notice some tells and patterns like these.

Like, for me when the devs try to force a hip label like "The Dark Souls of FPS" or "The -popular game- Killer". That's a red flag.

When the DLC costs more than the base game and there is a ridiculous amount of it.

Early access survival.

When they start saying how amazing and awarded the game is in the trailer.

When they give the player an exposition dump, and throw the "show, don't tell" concept out the window.

When the main character is super powerful and shoooper goooood (a Mary Sue).

Every single drama that follows the entire concept of "I lost my loved ones, so now all I want is revenge, and I'm always sad and angry!!".

Etc.

A sudden release date. Never heard of the game before, just appears on the featured page of Steam randomly, releases next week.

Bad trailers.

Remember that Mortal Kombat trailer with some generic rap music in the background? That was absolutely horrible and I don't care if anyone thinks otherwise.

When it comes to gameplay in trailers, if I see someone playing it slowly and moving the camera so viewers can go "OMG THE VISUALS!", I instantly assume game's trash.

My red flags:

"JRPG" ... 🚩

"Anime" ... 🚩

"Deckbuilding" ... 🚩

"MMO" ... 🚩🚩

"Multiplayer" ... 🚩🚩

"PvP" ... 🚩🚩🚩

"Early Access" ... 🚩🚩🚩

"Microtransactions" ... 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩

(There are some others but those are the ones that come most readily to mind.)

🤔

"The roadmap and big plans we have"

One of my life rules - if someone announced something big, they will usually fail. Those who can do it will be busy doing and have less talking.

Super high praise from games journalists, but little to no actual content shown. Or on the other hand like having an embargo until after the games release.

DLC before it even comes out.
Mad Scientist Jul 4, 2021 @ 1:23pm
-Day-1 DLC
-Lots of DLC.
-When 2-4 DLC is more expensive than the "digital deluxe edition".
-"Season Pass", especially when there's more than 1 "season pass".
-AAA, over-hyped game bound to be a mess on release for a couple months or longer
-Anything that's advertised on content creators videos as a sponsor.
-Blatant ripoff of another game, with different graphics but a similar name.

Also, hype.

The bigger the hype, the greater the chance of disappointment.

Yeah.
Early access games with separate DLC and Early access in general.

Anything with a EA or Ubisoft logo. Always looking for the catch.
