How is Epic giving away so many free games?
I still prefer Steam, but damn so far: Rime, Stories untold, City of Brass, Kingdom new Lands, more that I missed and supposedly more coming, these aren't $1 indie clones, how do they afford giving them all away?

Besides the new Metro I got there, I hit them up every 2 weeks for what ever free game they are handing out. :lunar2019piginablanket:

Fortnite/Tencent money. It's a PR move for them, they said one game every two weeks for a year(?).

This ^. The publisher/developer dont lose anything, they get paid by Epic for the "free" games they release. Its just a marketing move by EPIC, same as all those "exclusive" releases they get by throwing their Tencent money around.

this is not the dev/pub giving them away there. that is epic, and they paid for it.

Epic are multi-billionaires and they have a platform where they need to capture as many people as possible aside from Fortnite kids. Luring them with freebies, getting their account and details is all part of the plan to keep them onboard and grow the Store in the hope they start spending in years to come. Epic also pay publishers/developers sweet money to have games published on the platform.

They are spending a lot of money in the hope of making more money and remain sustainable when Fortnite inevitably declines. They don't want their share prices or company value sliding so they need as many revenue streams as possible. Also they have Unreal to fall back on; they can't just rely on that going forward. They've made some aggressive and messy strides but for those with Epic accounts, they've picked up some decent freebies.

Epics goal is basically to establish themselves as a major store and primary competitor to steam before fortnite stops being mega successful.
And their strategy to accomplish this involves being really aggressive about getting as many users as possible.
That means exclusivities by offering the developers basically a guaranteed number of minimum sales (so if you are expected to sell 100.000 copies of a game within the first three months, but only sell 10.000 then epic will pay for the remaining 90.000 out of their own pockets), heavy discounts (during their mega sale Epic actually lost money with each purchase made during it) and free games (for which Epic also pays full price).
At the end they've pissed off lots of people with their exclusivity bs, their store is still ♥♥♥♥ (they really dont seem determined on adding much needed features to raise the user experience) and they lost money.

As soon as fortnite stops being a massive cash machine the EGS is pretty much ♥♥♥♥♥♥ since it wont be able to keep up its aggression.

Fortnite kids money.... and they are desparate for customers.

They can keep their "free" games. Installing the unsecure spyware launcher is much too expensive and dangerous.

You do know right that Epic has BILLIONS in the bank from Fortnite? They have enough money to keep doing this almost forever.
