I forgot to mention, another game I really enjoyed was Baten Kaitos if that helps out in anyway for recommendations!
I found this old thread while looking for exactly the same thing, a decent ccg with a proper solo play option. The op put things perfectly, so no reason to start a new thread!
Obviously he never got a satisfactory answer, so has anything come along in the past couple of years? Any decent solo ccg's out there?

dunno about yugis single player but the DLCs scream singleplayer. the other 2 are solo only. stuff like shadowverse has a decent playable solo story but the whole game makes no real sense if not played against other people.
System shock is all solo as well
- Yu-Gi-Oh definitely looks like the best bet on the list! Gotta check out plenty of vids before investing.
- Card City Nights looks... different. I'm a bit sad that it looks like it only has 8hrs of gameplay, which is fair enough for the price, but it'll only scratch my itch for a couple of afternoons.
- Dead Man's Draw - well, it's a card game, but not really a ccg! One reviewer compared it to blackjack? No deck-building as far as I can see.
- Thea looks.. a bit of a mess if I'm honest! I liked one of the reviews I saw - "Do you like rpg's? 4x strategy? Survival games? Rogue-likes? Good, because I don't know which of these Thea is, and I don't think the game knows either!"
- System Shock - um, ...? Isn't that an rpg/fps?
- Shadowverse I'm downloading to give it a try, despite many toxic reviews, which mainly come from people moaning about top level pvp imbalance which doesn't interest me.
To be clear about what I'm really looking for: basically I got really excited by Elder Scrolls Legends having a story mode, but was completely disappointed that it ended up being just 20 fights which you burn through in one session as an introduction to the main game, so I basically want that, but a full game, like 40hrs+. I haven't bought any of the Hearthstone stories, but One Night in Karazhan looks like what I'm after - although again, that's not a full game, just a way of gearing up some more for the pvp. Trouble is, no dev seems to make these games all about story mode, it's all about spending big bucks trying to be competitive in end-game pvp. It's surprisingly fun, though. It's a bit of many things, but those aspects are blended well. But I'd not get it as a card game.
The single player component in Shadowverse isn't very fleshed out. It's mostly just a tutorial and not finished. It's much like Hearthstone, just a bit better/deeper. It's free, though, so no harm in trying it out.
Gwent will have an expansive single player component, if you like the Witcher universe. The last time I checked it out it had just the multiplayer part. Rather different from all the Magic clones out there.
*JRPG
*definately a CCG
*Card Battle
*Good story
I've beat it around 3 times. So, i recommend this. I myself am trying to find RPG CCGs single player games.
Etherlords is also a ccg rpg
I love monster rancher!! Can't believe I missed this one back in the day. Thanks for letting me know :)
Will also chck out Etherlords as well. I'm surprised you even found this thread considering how old it is haha.

Plays basically just like M:tG, and the single player campaign will easily last you 30+ hours.
Probably best I've seen out there
This actually does sound interesting. Added to Wishlist for next week's summer sale, in case it gets discounted.
