External 144hz monitor with MSI GE70 gaming laptop
Hi I have MSI GE70 Apache pro gaming laptop with Nvidia gtx 860m graphic card and 144 hz monitor Benq XL 2411Z. Since my laptop has VGA and HDMI port only, I hooked up the monitor with VGA cable. So, I can have 1024x768 @120hz in desktop setting, but since I am trying to play with 1280x960, I can only have 75hz in desktop setting. I heard that I have set the desktop setting same as cs go ingame setting to have 120hz. So is there anyway to have 1280x960 @120hz with my laptop? Would my graphic card work with 1280x960 @120hz? Please give me any suggestions so that I can have 1280x960@120hz. Thank you.

Found in the Web
- VGA/D-SUB/QXGA/"Analogue" -> Don't use them unless you have absolutely no choice. These are being phased out for good reason.

- HDMI -> is fine for 1080p @ 60, and is often the only interface you case use with TVs. If you want a high refresh rate monitor though, HDMI won't allow it. HDMI 2.0 makes 4K @ 60hz possible, and again for TVs is sometimes the only option. But any 4K computer monitor should have Displayport and that would be my choice

- DVI -> is more flexible than HDMI because it DOES allow higher frame rates such as 120 & 144hz @ 1080p (provided that source, cable and display are ALL dual link). However with the different DVI types in outputs and cables (I/D/DL) it can be confusing for people and it's easy to get the wrong thing somewhere along the line. it's being phased out for displayport anyway.

- Displayport -> does everything (including audio)

Don't use VGA, it is outdated and won't work.

What you should be doing is connecting to your monitor through your HDMI slot. Assuming both the monitor, computer and HDMI cable are at least HDMI 1.4 compatible, you can export your display to your monitor at a maximum of 1080p at 120hz. Much better then VGA.

I have the same problem..im looking into some external gpu stuff...but i cant find anything about external gpu and 144hz. If any1 knows about this? all the ext gpu docs are connected with usb to laptop and im wondering if that will be a problem.

USB would likely be the limiting factor. Unless you have USB 3.1, it isn't worth it. If you do have USB 3.1, then it might be worth it.
