This isn't a quick work, especially when a quick Google search provide you with all the information you need, without Valve being needed for that.
Furthermore, I never thought seriously of such ratings, as they are frequently broken by everyone.
I disagree.
Anybody other ideas?
It seems obvious to me to include it … you don't have to use it, and if a games doesn't have one then fine, that game doesn't appear.
So first of all is it not better you disable the kids to get to the store from the first place? or when you there put the wrong age for a game and all that age games will be block up to when you restart Steam
I do agree a filter like that for the family View will be good any way
Again as noted above, many games do not have PEGI ratings. Thus a PEGI filter is not a catch all for content
Part of the joy of gaming is the voyage of discovery, and sharing this with your children (we tend to sit around the family TV) is doubly so: I have a 9yo and a 6yo and PEGI ratings are a godsend. There is nothing worse than buying a game, playing through it as a family, and halfway through hearing a swearword that my kids don't need to hear: it means I have to find the time to play-through any game prior to letting it near the family, which means I can't then join in solving the puzzles, as I've already solved them on my own (or had to find a walkthrough to get me through the game quickly so I've vetted it).
So the arguments regarding the T&Cs for a Steam account, and indeed the splash pages for 18+ games are somewhat spurious: the PEGI ratings (& ESRB etc) are there to help me make an informed purchase, and to save me the time of rating games myself.
It's a constant source of frustration finding an otherwise excellent game, and then discovering that it isn't age appropriate: being able to list games by PEGI category would save huge amounts of my time, and encourage me to "dip in" to steam quickly and make a purchase for the family.
Valve have made it clear that they want to push Steam into the living room (and right they are too - the PC-on-a-desk doesn't have long to live in most homes) and keep gaming social, both online and off. Family-friendly features such as this (and the ability to lock away my "grown up games in Steam, rather than have them in a separate account) will eventually become essential features.
Satoru, I don't understand your argument: If you can't get a 100% solution that's not a good reason to do nothing! For those games that are already rated (and I guess it's the majority of the games here) the rating is not even displayed! An optional filter for us parents would be perfect.
After marking "Show games up to PEGI 7", games with Pegi 3/7 will appear, higher PEGI and no PEGI will not. Simple as that.
That'll also pretty fast force develpers interested in selling their PEGI<18 games to include that rating into the game.
And no, googling for PEGI is not an option, there's way too many games to treat google as a good workaround.
... Yeah. But going directly to the PEGI website and making your search FROM THERE is an option that works. You'll find there all their ratings since 2003.
Also, it's fast.
No need for such a feature.
Yes, I saw that afterwards. It's better than google, but it's not what I'm looking for exactly.
If I buy games, I usually do that on steam special offers usually.
I'd like to ask steam - "Hey, what can I get to my kid for 5 EUR?", and then sort that by metascore or user ratings.
I agree that it's not critically needed update. But that's an improvement that will for sure be handy for some and shouldn't disturb others, so why not?
There's not much games that are kid friendly here on Steam - or on the whole current game market actually, except on the nintendo consoles - so some tools to generate a list would come in handy.
That would also be a useful curator - maybe the only one. Maybe there's already a group that list those games?
