Tag: "Non-Indie"?
When browsing games can we have a tag which is "Non-Indie"?

i.e. so we can chose to display only Non-Indie games.

Why do we get the option to show only Indie games but not the other way round?

And I know some people will say "you can't have that because nobody tags a game as non-indie", but it would not be difficult to program it to display all the games which do not have Indie tags.

Sorry, I'm not particularly interested in any of those... And I missed free Payday anyway with the stupid new storefront (especially now that you can't search on metascore - only on user review - don't get me started on that).

Indie is a ill defined term really. People that hate it just use it to define "Garbage". But it's thrown out there on multiple games without much meaning.

Independence usually implies not using a big third party publisher to handle your game. But then that gets into a grey area where excellent games like Dust which was a single person behind it all from what I gathered, yet used Microsoft to get the game out. Or the Witcher series which has been called "Indie" yet their developer is their Publisher, and a big one at that. It's kind of like calling Final Fantasy series "Indie" because Square Enix is the developer and publisher... doesn't make much sense.

I don't mind missing out on the odd mis-tagged game if I can just remove all the junk I have to wade through to find a decent game.

in long-term chrystal ball view the tag non-indie will include no games anymore because by definition a game from the developer EA Studios and the publisher EA Studios is an indie game and more and more devs do not require a publisher at all since steam allows them to promote and sell their stuff easily.

I get the idea, and I hope you don't mind me saying that the better solution is for Valve to better support negative searching. Because by the same token, people could quite reasonably want a "non-FPS" tag, a "non-RPG" tag, a "non-Casual" tag, etc, and in the long term it's better we be able to make proper use of the tags we have than clog up the tag lists with searching workarounds.

Yes, good idea, I don't mind how it would be achieved.

"Indie" as a tag or genre does not make sense to me, "non-indie" makes even less sense. The crocodile's suggestion is probably the best.

But what does that mean?

Valve by definition is an indie gaming company. They make games without an external publishers support, Tropico 4 is an indie game for the same reason. If you want it to mean "very small company who made 8-bit looking games" - that isn't going to be exclusive to those.

AAA tag, problem solved.

Which then removes EVERY pre-order game from the store as the third A refers to it's financial success, something that you can't know until it's been released.

The second A refers to 'innovative gameplay" - so If L4D was considered AAA then L4D2 couldn't be as it isn't innovative, it's the same, so you've lost EVERY sequel out there unless the game has changed dramatically.

Assuming reviewers like the game, yes it can get their first A rating.

Or just bring back the option to sort on Metacritic scores - so we don't need to devise these kinds of elaborate workarounds.

Nice history lesson, but these days AAA is simply a classification used for games with large development budgets, usually received by AAA publishers such as Nintendo, Ubisoft, EA, Sony, Square Enix and Microsoft. Even in the past when AAA referred to critical success, innovative success and financial success games would still be called AAA titles in expectation of its success.

So I will apologize for just saying "AAA tag" without a proper explanation of the term's current usage. AAA tag, as in having an actual publisher; a publisher that would be considered a AAA publisher in general as defined by their financial success and ability to finance a game's development and support a large dev team. Should I define what I mean by large dev team for you, or do you think you can handle it from here? Aside from some pillock like you, I'm sure giving a game a AAA tag would suffice since it seems now 90% of games in the Steam Store now have the Indie tag.
