Sub-categories in game Library
Why do we still not have the ability to create subcategories in the Library; if you have 100+ games not to mention 1000+ as some people do, it becomes impossible to organise as you end up with way too many categories.

This was suggested way back in 2011 and we still don't have it implemented.

Original suggestion:

"Categories and Sub-categories
Categories are good, but when you start to to have lots of games in your library, they are not enough. Some people have hundreds of games and to manage them by categories becomes harder when their number increase. Either you choose to only have a few relevant categories but then they will contain too many games to still be useful. Or you create more precise categories for smaller game groups but then the categories themselves will become too numerous to still be useful.
The solution would be to implement a Category / Sub-Category system such as the folders / sub-folders for the files on your computer. Thus you could have a big "Strategy" category with inside some "Turn-Based", "Real Time", Total War", etc. sub-categories. It would be so convenient."

We need this ASAP.

looking into my crystal ball, they want to utilize the tagging system in the future if they do a rehaul of the library portion of the client.

as it is Valve. this will take time as no one is throwing a whip.

I am surprised this is not getting more attention, it has been another several months, another few sales and bundles down the road and I am sure I can't be the only one who is finding it hard to manage an ever growing Steam game library.

The current library organisation is completely useless if you have more then 100+ games.

Sorely needed!

But Valve are too busy making Steam more console friendly, aka Big Picture Mode, for the couch potato gamers. Seems like BPM gets all the feature updates these days while the core client just gets bug fixes. :steamfacepalm:

And even current categories feature is lagging sometimes, especially when steam is turning on. (at least I have to wait a bit for categories to appear)
And I agree when you have more than 100 games you need subcategories. For example, I have created RPG category in my steam library, and I have a lot of games in this genre, so I would like to sort them somehow. Otherwise, what is the point of this category if I can't navigate there.

I think this depends on HOW you manage. I have over 1k and so far no issues.

I agree with you, OP.
I'm an organization nut, and having subcategories would make things much easier. However, I don't find them as important as you do, but this truly depends on the person and how they're organizing. Currently, my organization method for my library is working out okay. It could be better, though.
Saying that, it does seem it would be necessary (at least with my organization method) once the game count hits about 500 or so (which is twice as much as I have now).
Even having only ~250 games, though, I'm always forgetting what games I actually have, which makes the search option useless. (But I'm very forgetful.)
Needing to have a certain method to the madness makes me want to ask what the point is of even letting us do it ourselves.

That is the exact problem I often have, I have the main games list and then several categories, the problem is its impossible to remember all the games so when I open up Steam I ussually just fire one of the games in my main category and rarely go to the other ones.
Plus with around 500 games some of the categories are becomming way too long and would benefit from sub-categorising.

But as you and indecendence above you mentioned, it all depends on how you organise it and what is your personal style of sorting games.

Sub-categories in my case would be useful so main categories can be general e.g. done playing, good games, crap games, old XP games, ... etc.
and in sub-categories you could have AAA/indie or different genre categories... etc.

I don't think Valve ever thought of this issue at the beginning as before digital distribution and particularly bundles and ton of cheap indie games close to no-one would own hundreds or even thousands of games on discs as they do now in their Steam libraries.

it should be an interesting to have the possibility to create our own sub-categories in our library !!

I know this is an old discussion, but sub-categories for our game libraries needs to happen.

I'm currently in the process of trying to organise my games into categories, as at present I can't remember what most of my games are about, which in turn makes it much harder for me to decide what to play. Being allowed to create single categories is a help (albeit small), though having the option to create sub-categories would be really helpful.

I find it ridiculous that Valve is not doing anything to make the Steam client on Windows better; there have been no new features added to the client in months if not years, with each new client update only having few fixes for the main client and everything else is about the controller or VR or big picture, etc.. that the majority of people rarely use; while the main Steam client is lacking basic features like library sub-categories or better inventory item sorting, etc, etc....

The main idea behind this is the possibility to tick a category to show the sub categories and untick to hide these as the file explorer in windows. This way, you are able to have a more compact library and possibly more organized. As far as I'm concerned I have 50 categories for 500+ games (organized by genres + 6 extra filters for coop/local coop/achievement tracking). Right now the more "satisfying" ways I found to organize my library is to do it in an excel doc which allows me to do exactly what I want.

This thread is over a year old, and there were others going back 3+ years. I think it is safe to say at this point that Valve does not care about improving the user experience in the Steam desktop client. This is supported by the fact that there have been no feature updates, other then bug fixes, to the desktop side of the client for years.

I just don't get how with millions of users Valve can't even bother to introduce common sense ease of use updates.

I know but I'm pretty optimistic that one day, even if it's not top priority, they will do something about it. Anyway, happy new year 2017.
