That isn't reddit. If I recall, their system requires you to purchase such awards.

Steam points are free with any purchase that a user would normally make.
And they also have had abuse of their own award system.

I don't understand why I can give awards for a screenshot, but I can't for a message, especially since now there is basically nowhere to spend points.
Yet you want something done like reddit. Let Steam be Steam and Reddit be Reddit.
As with the Reddit awards, it was being abused. Same would likely happen here as well.
The point shop it open year round and new items being added to it, so there is still something to spend points on. During sales and other events, there will be even more to spend point on as well, so you should save them.

"Need" it, no. No one needs an award for a forum post.
Some may want it, yes.
If they choose to do so, then they choose to do so. I'd rather not have the extra headache, both from a user and moderator point of view.
