Punishments for those who toe the line of the rules
As it stands now, you can only be punished for overtly breaking the rules, but as long as you cleverly don't break any rules, you're allowed to be as condescending, snide, and rude as you want to be. There are people who know where the line of the rules is and toes the line to bait out people to get banned. I propose that if someone gets punished because of someone doing this, the person doing this shares the same exact punishment. It would either clean up the forums or just get those ban numbers up, but it's better than doing nothing.

I got a day ban by a Steam mod, later upheld by Steam support, because I said a guy was acting foolishly. I said "your foolishness is making the rest of us look bad." To be clear I'm not saying you are, that is merely an example from the past said now for educational purposes only. I'm not calling anyone here foolish.

So first they would need to make it crystal clear what exactly the line is. Because I had no idea the above warranted a day ban. I've seen and reported FAR worse that never has action taken against them.

all steam moderators, not game devs/mods.

i was false banned once for talking about a games feature, the ban was removed.

i also got false banned for mentioning i got a game for free ( you can assume the reason) and 2 comments above that i also mentioned a community member gifted it to me, needless to say, but that got removed as well.

not to mention 4 or so other false bans that were removed because they were "unwarranted".

i have also had a false warning, i got removed again as "unwarranted" lol.

thin there was some "excessive" bans with lareg amounts of time, that were removed and basically, "time served".

so, if they did as OP suggested, they for sure would need to make sure, they are correctly applied and/or context read.

they also need to clarify the rules better, so people can easily follow them, as well bring back no politics and religion.

just imagine a false perma ban lol.

I've had many false permabans from devs I annoyed, upheld by Steam support. A dev permabanned me because I kept politely asking for achievements in their news postings, upheld by Steam support. Got recently banned from Forbidden West because I merely asked why the character is so ugly. I wasn't rude or disrespectful to any user. Steam support upheld the ban basically saying devs can have their own rules of how to ban. This was a week ago. Then 2 days after that I got the day ban above, which to remind you was upheld by Steam support also and not reversed.

Worse, I've had so many false bans that now any time I get any ban of any kind for any reason my account gets an automatic 2 week community ban preventing me from doing anything with the community. So far I've been able to get Steam support to reverse these community bans.

But I am legitimately fearful to give any kind of criticism or negativity, lest I get banned and then have the community ban which delists all my marketplace items and is a right pain in the rear. When what gave me the day ban is justified by Valve, I'm apparently not allowed to say ANYTHING negative about somebody, even though it seems everyone else is allowed to. I also avoid snark and sarcasm, because what if I get a mod who deems that disrespectful? Disrespectful is such a generic, potentially all encompassing thing, it doesn't make sense as a rule.

Steam is NOT remotely a free speech platform. Now I only discuss games, avoid any kind of conversation with people, and try to stick purely to gaming. In all honesty I shouldn't even be making these comments, so I think this will be my last one here. My Steam account is everything to me, and a community ban is extraordinarily stressful and damaging.

Pretty much. The bans are designed to be as arbitrary and punishing as possible when the rules themselves are subjective and vague, enforcing an archetype of a culture that nobody is actually native to, hence why so many bans get handed out for edge case stuff like your experience.

That having been said, game devs themselves are the sovereigns of their forums. They may freely ignore the Steam rules and ban you for reporting them for violating them as such. They can ban for any reason or no reason.

It would be nice if Steam correctly calculated how arbitrary and abusable that is, especially given multiple documented instances of such abuse, but Steam prefers punitive measures over reasonable assessment and better posting, sadly.

i like the fact that steam sells ass an titty games yet, wants to ban a user for calling someone childish or stupid.

clearly steam is stupid for selling pornographic material yet trying to offend its customers with pointless forum bans, while providing sketchy and indecent material.

its questionable we have all seen how hypocritical steam wants to be, I honestly don't think its steam as much as corruption within the moderation and its low life employee's wanting to try to take authority over the customers.

this is what happens when you give authority to cowards and people who lack moral and ethical resolve. Its a mental disability that grown men have who suffer from E.D.

i imagine that most of the steam moderation and support can't function in real life and they all got bullied hard growing up, this has lead to how they act as grown adults.

it has nothing to do with right or wrong, its simple penis envy that makes steams moderation and support act out against people who would sooner spit on over priced games and those that try to defend a shady company such as steam.

some of us speak out against steam not because we dislike steam, but because the moderation and the support within steam are questionable criminals shaming the platform with scams and abusive practices.
