playtime on Steam is recorded since march 2009 and testing for that happened a year before.

the "veteran" coin is a community thing and requires playtime, not just ownership of a cs game and until playtime was recorded, you technically just owned the game, you did not play it.

that is mostly why:
5 year in 2013 (2008+5)
10 year in 2018 (2008+10)

"20 year veteran coin" in 2023 doesn't work.
if there will be one, it will be 15, not 20.

there may be another commemorative thing but a 20 year vet coin makes no sense.

Valve officially started counting/tracking time in 2008.

The 10 Year Veteran coin was release during the Dec 17, 2018 CS:GO update...

And the 5 year coin was released in 2013...

The 20 year Veteran coin won't happen until at least 2028, if Valve adds them.

This is interesting, since in my personal game data for CS2 it has my first Counter Strike franchise game listed as 2005-09-19 00:34:10 GMT. Even if they didn't start tracking until 2008 or 2009, they do have a record of your first CS game. I did play CS 1.6 for years before I made a Steam account since I was skeptical of online accounts back then. It would be a safe bet that any account with their first CS game recorded in the first few years of Steam actually played the game. Harddrive space was so limited in those days so people didn't download games just to not play them.

It's all about play time, not when you bought the game or added it to Steam.

What do you mean? The 10 year coin says given to players who have been apart of the counter-strike community for 10 years. Nothing about playing time lol

The player must have owned the game for ten years and played the game at least once.
